Japan’s Embassy in Budapest is the consular point for Japanese nationals in Hungary and for eligible applicants seeking a Japanese visa from the country. Access is organized by appointment, except for overseas-voting procedures that the Embassy identifies as not requiring one. Before travelling, separate three needs that are often confused: Japanese documents for use in Hungary, family records that must be registered in Japan, and visas to enter Japan.
The office is at 1125 Budapest, Zalai út 7; the main telephone is +36 1 398 3100 and the consular email is consul@bp.mofa.go.jp. The Embassy asks applicants to book by phone or email and provide their name, telephone number, purpose and up to three preferred dates. For visa applications and collection, the English page lists counter hours Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 1:30–4:00 p.m., except holidays; confirm hours for other procedures when arranging a visit. Appointments help the Consular Section manage attendance and reduce waiting.
Passport services cover first issuance, renewal, personal-data changes, loss or damage and travel documents for return to Japan. Online applications use ORR Net; collection requires an appointment and the applicant’s personal attendance. The Embassy estimates two weeks to one month after a complete online application, while errors can add time. Counter applications are paid in cash; yen credit-card payment is available only for eligible online applications. The mission cannot issue a Japanese family-register extract (koseki tohon); request it from the relevant municipality in Japan.
The office also issues residence, birth, marriage, signature and other certificates; some can be requested electronically as e-certificates. Check with the receiving institution that it accepts the electronic format. Services for Japanese nationals include birth, marriage and nationality notifications, overseas residence registration, voting, driving-licence guidance and school textbooks during the announced application period. Hungarian residence permits, by contrast, are handled by Hungarian authorities.
Japanese visa eligibility is separate: foreign nationals living in Hungary generally need a valid Hungarian residence permit; the Embassy is not the place to apply while merely visiting. Applicants submit in person by appointment, and the published ordinary processing time is five working days, although a case can take longer. Hungarian passport holders may be visa-exempt for qualifying short visits of up to 90 days, but work or long-term study requires a different process.
