What consular services does Japan offer in Bratislava, and how do you book?

Passports, certificates, registrations, visas and appointments at Japan’s Consular Section in Bratislava, based on current official guidance.

Japan’s Embassy in Slovakia brings consular assistance for Japanese nationals and Japanese visa applications together in Bratislava. Its official index, updated in September 2026, links to passport, birth and marriage, certificate, safety and visa procedures. The Embassy recommends booking so staff can review the purpose and documents. It also says walk-ins may be assisted, although appointments receive priority.

The office is at Hlavné námestie 2, 813 27 Bratislava. The official directory lists +421 2 5980 0100 and consular@bv.mofa.go.jp. The consular counter operates Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–12:30 p.m. and 1:30–5:00 p.m., except published closure dates. To request a visit, the Embassy asks applicants to email or call with the purpose, contact details and about three preferred dates and times. It recommends booking so staff can explain the documents; walk-ins may also be assisted, but appointments receive priority.

For Japanese residents, the menu covers passport issuance and renewal, overseas residence registration, birth and marriage notifications, other civil-status and nationality filings, certificates and safety information. The mission has separate passport and certificate pages with their own requirements; check whether the case requires an in-person appearance, original documents, photographs or proof of Slovak residence. A consular certificate is not the same as an apostille: the Embassy notes that apostille and authentication are handled by Japan’s central authorities.

The office also processes Japanese visas, but eligibility depends on nationality, residence and purpose. A visitor passing through Slovakia should not assume that an application can be filed in Bratislava; first contact the Consular Section and explain where you legally reside and which category you need. For many work or long-term stay routes, documents from a host in Japan form part of the process; the mission’s visa pages explain applicable categories and paperwork. Avoid buying a non-refundable itinerary on the assumption that a visa will be issued by a particular date.

A useful appointment request is concise but specific: nationality, current address, procedure, deadline and documents already available. Once the Embassy replies, choose one proposed time and assemble originals and copies from the official checklist. Check both Slovak and Japanese holiday closures. Walk-ins may receive assistance, but appointments are prioritized; confirm the service and document checklist before travelling.
