What Japanese consular services are available in Athens, and how do you arrange a visit?

Passports, certificates, registration, visas and access to Japan’s Consular Section in Athens.

Athens concentrates Japan’s consular services for Greece in one location: the Consular Section sits inside the Embassy in Halandri, northeast of central Athens. A Japanese national renewing a passport or registering a birth follows a different route from someone applying for a Japanese visa. Separating those two tracks is the first practical step: the official website distinguishes services for Japanese nationals from entry-to-Japan applications, which depend on nationality, residence and travel purpose.

The published consular address is 46 Ethnikis Antistasseos St., 152 31 Halandri, Athens; the direct telephone numbers are +30 210 670 9910 and 9911, and the consular email is consular@at.mofa.go.jp. The counter is open Monday to Friday, 9:00 a.m.–4:00 p.m., except holidays; telephone inquiries are received from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The Embassy’s access guide describes a roughly 20-minute walk from Holargos station on the blue metro line. Check the route and service on the day, and note that the Embassy says visitor parking is not available.

For Japanese passports, the current page, updated 29 July 2026, sets out different documents for a first passport, renewal, change of particulars and loss. Depending on the case, the file can include an application, current passport, photograph and Japanese family-register record; applicants must also establish lawful residence in Greece. Online applications are available where the rules permit, but that does not mean every step is remote: collection and identity checks depend on the procedure. Someone who loses a passport during a short stay may need a police report, photographs and a return ticket for an emergency travel document; the Embassy says it cannot accept an incomplete file.

Certificates include residence, birth, marriage, signature, translation and police certificates. The Embassy gives five days as the general issuance period for several certificates, with variation by document; some eligible certificates can be applied for and received electronically through ORR Net. Signature certification and police certificates still require an in-person step. Fingerprints are taken for the police certificate, which can take about two months or longer. Family matters also have a strict deadline: when a child born abroad acquires another nationality at birth, the Japanese nationality-retention declaration must accompany the birth notification within three months.

Visas follow a third track. The Consular Section requires appointments both to submit an application and to collect the passport; its published standard processing time is at least six working days, with longer waits possible if extra documents are requested. In general, non-Greek nationals need a valid Greek residence permit to apply in Athens; a temporary visit to Greece is not sufficient by itself. Before booking travel, email the applicant’s nationality, visa category and intended dates, wait for an appointment, use the category-specific checklist and allow time for processing. The Embassy also distributes safety alerts and consular assistance information for Japanese nationals in Greece.
