How to study at Ivy Tech Indianapolis: admission, tuition, programs and campuses

A practical guide to admission, published tuition, financial aid, English-language pathways and the distinct Ivy Tech sites serving Indianapolis and nearby counties.

Indianapolis is a city where the route to a credential can begin at one address and continue at another. Ivy Tech’s local operation serves Marion, Boone and Hendricks counties, with its full-service campus downtown and specialized classrooms from the northwest side to Plainfield. Before picking classes, it helps to distinguish the college’s statewide catalogue from the courses available at a particular site.

Who can apply and what does admission require?

The general application is free and open access: Ivy Tech says applicants do not need a minimum GPA or test score. Students typically provide high-school or GED information, contact details and a government-issued ID to verify identity. Admission to the institution is not the same as acceptance to every program. Nursing and some health-sciences tracks have additional prerequisites, applications and limited seats. After acceptance, students set up MyIvy, complete the new-student checklist, arrange course placement, file for aid if eligible and register.

The school offers several start points rather than one annual intake, with eight-week sessions in January, March, June, August and October. Applicants should leave time for identity verification, advising, financial-aid review and placement before the term begins. The official application checklist is the best place to confirm which documents and steps apply to an individual student; international applicants have separate visa and English-proficiency requirements.

Published tuition and ways to lower the bill

For the 2025–26 through 2026–27 rate period, Ivy Tech lists Indiana-resident tuition at $178.38 per credit hour for part-time enrollment or a flat $2,577.11 per semester for 12 or more credits. The published nonresident and international full-time rate is $4,967.51 per semester. At the in-state full-time rate, two regular semesters amount to $5,154.22 in tuition and mandatory fees before books, transport, supplies or program-specific charges. Part-time students pay by credit, and some courses carry extra fees. Rates are statewide, not an Indianapolis-only average; the current tuition table should be checked before comparing budgets.

Financial aid can change the net price substantially. Ivy Tech directs students to file the FAFSA for federal Pell and Supplemental Educational Opportunity grants, Indiana programs such as Frank O’Bannon and Adult Student Grant, campus and college scholarships, need-based fee assistance, and work-study. The Workforce Ready Grant through Next Level Jobs can cover tuition and mandatory fees for eligible Indiana residents in approved short-term credentials; eligibility rules include residency, FAFSA and prior-degree conditions. A scholarship or grant is gift aid, while loans must be repaid. Students should ask the Indianapolis financial-aid office to review their own award before assuming a program is free.

Can you study there while still learning English?

Ivy Tech’s English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) pathway is designed to strengthen speaking, listening, reading and writing before or alongside a college plan. The published steps are to apply, contact the Express Enrollment Center, take an ESOL placement test, and meet with an adviser to choose a schedule. The current ESOL page lists average course costs of $500 for Indiana residents and $850 for nonresidents, but a student should confirm the class schedule, local availability and exact charge with Indianapolis before enrolling. Completion can prepare students for regular college courses; the English program is not itself a degree.

Programs, credits and realistic study time

Ivy Tech Indianapolis lists 57 programs in fields that include nursing, medical imaging, respiratory therapy, biology and biotechnology, business, logistics, information technology, cybersecurity, software development, engineering technology, automotive and diesel technology, public safety, human services, culinary arts and hospitality. Credentials range from short workforce certificates to technical certificates and associate degrees. Many associate pathways are planned around roughly 60 credits and four semesters of full-time study; the catalog also shows longer tracks, such as nursing at 69–73 credits and four semesters after program admission, while prerequisites may add time. Some certificates can take one to three semesters, depending on the credential. Work schedules, course availability, transfer credit and clinical or lab requirements can change a student’s actual timeline.

Credits are not a promise that every class will transfer to every university. Ivy Tech has transfer agreements and Indiana College Core pathways, but students should compare the exact degree map with the receiving institution before choosing courses. Its Indianapolis program directory names local offerings; the course search confirms where and when each section meets.

Seven locations, seven different purposes

The Downtown Campus is the full-service entry point for admissions, financial aid, advising, assessment and tutoring. Within that district, the Illinois Fall Creek Center houses renovated nursing and health-sciences labs, a biopharma lab and student spaces. At the Conference Center and Culinary Institute, culinary and hospitality students work in a public-facing restaurant and bakery-café; visitor parking is documented at the site, but restaurant hours follow the term calendar.

On the northwest side, the Automotive Technology Center concentrates vehicle, diesel and manufacturer-linked training. The Emerging Manufacturing Collaboration Center at 16 Tech uses industrial robotics for workforce instruction. The Public Safety Technology Training Center hosts specialized classes, including Environmental Management Institute courses. West of the city, MADE@Plainfield offers selected general, health-prerequisite, medical-assisting, IT and business courses with study areas, computers and help with registration and financial aid. It is in Hendricks County, not the City of Indianapolis, but belongs to the local service area.

For the downtown campus, IndyGo’s Red and Purple rapid-transit lines share a stop at Meridian Street and Fall Creek/Ivy Tech. Other sites are spread out, so the class location matters as much as the campus name in a registration screen. The official map lists the active buildings and satellite addresses; one former Lawrence facility is marked closed, and the college directs students to the current schedule rather than treating every address as an open campus. Students should also check which parking lot or transit connection applies to their specific building.

A technical school that became a statewide access point

Ivy Tech began in 1963 as Indiana Vocational Technical College, created to meet technical and industrial training needs. In 2005, state legislation broadened its role into Indiana’s community-college system. The Indianapolis operation was reorganized in 2021 from a nine-county region into a service area of Marion, Boone and Hendricks counties. Its local website reports 39,168 students served in the 2025–26 academic year across in-person, online and hybrid formats. The scale is visible in the spread of the sites: a single application leads into a network of health labs, manufacturing facilities, career training and transfer pathways, but each has its own course schedule and entry rules.

Start with the program, then confirm its location, credit map and net cost. That sequence is more useful than choosing a building first: it helps an applicant find the right adviser, make a realistic plan and avoid arriving at a site that does not offer the class or service they need.

Bottom line

Check current details and choose according to your budget, time and way of travelling.
