I moved to Newark, New Jersey, with Florida car insurance: do I need a New Jersey policy?

A Florida insurance card should not be treated as the final answer after a permanent move to Newark. New Jersey requires registered vehicles to carry auto insurance and directs drivers to present a New Jersey insurance identification card. Tell the insurer where the car will now be kept and ask whether it can issue New Jersey coverage through its local company or must replace the Florida contract. The key is a policy and proof document that meet New Jersey requirements on the date you register the vehicle—not merely a card that remains unexpired in Florida.

Change the policy without creating a coverage gap

Give your carrier the move date, Newark garaging address, vehicle identification number, household drivers and the way the car is used. Ask whether your existing policy remains valid during the transition, what New Jersey contract or endorsement is needed, what documentation it will issue, and the effective date. Get the answer in writing. New Jersey’s consumer Bill of Rights says not to cancel old coverage until replacement coverage is in effect. If the car is financed or leased, check the lender’s collision and comprehensive requirements too. Do not guess at a start date or let an automatic cancellation create a lapse.

New Jersey MVC requires a state insurance identification card for a New Jersey-registered vehicle. The card may be electronic or paper, but must identify the insurer, insured, policy number, dates, vehicle and New Jersey insurance-card heading. The MVC requirements page also explains what proof must be available during a traffic stop, collision or inspection. Ask the insurer for the New Jersey card before your registration appointment and verify that the carrier appears on the state’s current list of companies writing private passenger auto coverage.

Understand the 2026 policy choices

The most consequential current change is the Standard policy’s liability floor. For plans issued or renewed on or after January 1, 2026, New Jersey law raises bodily-injury limits to at least $35,000 for one injured person and $70,000 for injuries in one crash; property-damage liability is at least $25,000. A Standard policy also has personal-injury protection options and asks the policyholder to choose a limited or unlimited right-to-sue option. These are decisions to compare with an agent, because the lawsuit selection affects the claims that can be brought for pain and suffering.

New Jersey still offers a separate Basic policy, and it is materially narrower. The Department of Banking and Insurance says it has $5,000 in property-damage coverage, no bodily-injury liability by default (an optional $10,000 total limit is available), $15,000 PIP and no uninsured/underinsured-motorist coverage. Its low premium can come with substantial exposure if you cause a serious crash. Do not compare quotes by monthly price alone: use DOBI’s planner to compare the same drivers, vehicle, liability limits, PIP, deductibles and protections. The Standard-policy minimums are not a recommendation that those amounts will protect every household’s assets.

A Newark agency to include in the comparison

Massey Insurance Agency’s official site describes it as an independent firm founded in 1975 and says it offers auto coverage. NJDOBI lists Massey Agency Inc at 46 Lyons Avenue as an Essex County producer for the state’s assigned-risk PAIP program; that is a specific state-listing credential, not a quality endorsement or proof of its voluntary-market carrier panel. Ask the agency which carriers it currently represents and whether your situation belongs in the regular market or PAIP. The state list gives (973) 926-6300; the official Newark page posts weekday hours of 9 a.m.–5 p.m.

Google Maps showed 4.1/5 from 21 reviews for the Newark office when checked directly on September 28, 2026. The visible comments include praise for staff and a recent complaint about tax-service follow-up; they are not specific reviews of auto policies. Confirm the individual producer’s current New Jersey license, ask for the insurer’s legal name, and compare the written declarations before binding coverage. This is one local option to investigate, not a promise of lower prices or better claims service.
