I moved to New Hampshire with out-of-state car insurance: do I need a new policy?

New Hampshire is unusual: its DMV driver manual says the state has no general law requiring every driver to buy automobile insurance. That does not make an out-of-state policy automatically valid for a new New Hampshire address, nor does it protect an uninsured driver from the cost of a crash. The state’s House considered HB 1568 in 2026 to create mandatory minimum motor-vehicle insurance; the bill was ruled “Inexpedient to Legislate” on February 19 and did not become law.

Tell the carrier where the car is now kept

Contact the insurer shown on your declarations page, give it the date your household moved and the New Hampshire address where the vehicle is principally garaged. Ask whether the current contract can stay in force after a permanent move or whether the carrier must issue a policy written for New Hampshire. Request the answer, policy forms and effective date in writing. An insurer may need to update the risk address, premium or policy form. Do not cancel the prior contract until the company confirms the replacement coverage is active.

If the vehicle is financed or leased, read the lender or lease agreement and ask what coverage it requires. A lender can require collision and comprehensive coverage even when state law does not require every motorist to buy liability insurance. Also check insurance requirements for any other state where you regularly drive. New Hampshire’s rule does not exempt a motorist from a different state’s requirements.

Know when financial responsibility can still be required

New Hampshire law allows the state to require security and future proof of financial responsibility in certain post-crash circumstances. RSA 264:20 sets the proof amounts at $25,000 for injury or death to one person, $50,000 for two or more people in one accident and $25,000 for property damage, when proof is required under the chapter. Those figures are not a universal insurance policy minimum for every driver. An uninsured at-fault driver can still be personally responsible for damages and medical costs, and may face registration or driving-privilege consequences under the financial-responsibility laws. Buying a policy with liability coverage is a way to transfer some of that risk, but the limits and exclusions matter.

A local independent agency to include in your comparison

Fortified Insurance Agency in Manchester says it provides personal auto coverage through an independent, multiple-carrier model. Direct Google Maps showed 4.9/5 from 298 reviews for its Candia Road office on September 28, 2026. Google’s displayed review topics included auto insurance in 20 reviews, policy selection in 21 and quick responses in 12; this is the agency’s overall listing, not an auto-policy rating. The agency publishes (603) 644-3700 and weekday office hours. Its founder and principal agent is identified on the company’s staff page as Keith Beausoleil, CPCU, with more than three decades in the industry.

The New Hampshire Insurance Department directs consumers to its producer and adjuster licensing page for current status. That page and the linked live lookup were unavailable during this check, so MASKAY has not confirmed the agency’s or any named producer’s current license. Verify the agent and the insurer before paying, ask for the insurer’s name, compare the same limits and deductibles with another licensed source, and keep written proof of the start date. A 4.9 Google score and professional designation are useful context; neither is a substitute for a license check or a policy review.
