I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, with my car: when must I register it?

A move to Minneapolis starts a Minnesota vehicle-registration question with a short but conditional answer: new residents generally have 60 days to register an eligible vehicle that is still properly registered elsewhere. The state does not apply that allowance to every vehicle or every situation. Confirm that the vehicle qualifies

The DVS new-to-fleet guide also emphasizes that the former registration must be current. A truck or trailer used commercially may fall under a different rule; do not assume that a passenger-car exception applies to it. A vehicle bought after becoming a Minnesota resident also has separate tax and registration timing, so explain the purchase date when asking DVS for guidance.

Assemble title and insurance information

For a vehicle brought from another U.S. state, Minnesota asks for the current out-of-state title or an accepted alternative ownership record. Its registration page lists the current odometer reading, driver’s license or acceptable identification, and the insurer’s name, policy number and expiration date. If a lender holds the title, gather the lender’s information and confirm which ownership record the registrar will accept. A lease has additional documents from the leasing company. Do not mail an original title until you have checked the current instructions for your exact case.

The state directs new residents to register at a deputy registrar office or submit the completed title-and-registration application by mail with applicable fees. Use the official vehicle tax estimate or contact a registrar for the amount: passenger registration tax depends on details such as vehicle value and age, and local wheelage taxes can vary by county. A receipt from another state is not a reliable estimate for a new Minnesota title transaction.

Treat 60 days as an outside limit, not a target

Keep the existing registration valid and insurance active while organizing the transfer. Minnesota requires insurance information as part of registration and proof of insurance while operating a motor vehicle. If the plate will expire before the deadline, contact DVS or a deputy registrar about the next step instead of assuming the 60-day period renews the out-of-state plate. Bring the title, identity and insurance information together, then confirm any inspection or lien requirement specific to the vehicle before traveling to an office.
