I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota: can I keep my out-of-state auto insurance?

The move itself does not answer whether an existing auto policy can stay in force. Minnesota requires owners to maintain insurance for a vehicle that must be registered or is principally garaged in the state. The policy must satisfy Minnesota’s no-fault and liability rules. Call the current insurer with the new address, where the car will be parked, who drives it and when you plan to register it. Ask whether the company is authorized to write the required Minnesota coverage and can issue or rewrite the contract for the new garaging location. Do not rely on an old state’s insurance card as proof that the policy now meets Minnesota requirements.

Know which protections Minnesota requires

The state Commerce Department describes four required coverage components: personal injury protection (PIP), residual liability, and uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Minnesota’s basic no-fault benefits total at least $40,000 per injured person: $20,000 for medical expenses and $20,000 for non-medical expenses such as lost income and replacement services. The statutory liability minimums are $30,000 for injury to one person, $60,000 for two or more people in one crash, and $10,000 for property damage. Uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage each have minimum limits of $25,000 per person and $50,000 per crash.

Those are legal floors, not a recommendation that the minimum is enough for your household. Commerce advises consumers to compare several quotes and notes that minimum insurance may not protect all assets. Ask the agent to quote the same limits, deductibles, drivers and vehicles from each carrier. If a lender holds the title, check any separate collision or comprehensive requirements in the loan or lease.

A Twin Cities agency to include in the comparison

Bernauer Insurance Agency identifies auto coverage, compares multiple carriers and serves Minneapolis and the wider Twin Cities. Its Minneapolis office is by appointment in Northeast Minneapolis; the agency publishes 952-956-2502 for Spencer Bernauer, Monday–Friday 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m., with Saturday appointments by arrangement. The licensed business address on the Minnesota Sircon record is 10150 234th Street East, Lakeville; its official site does not publish a street address for the Minneapolis meeting point.

The state inquiry showed the agency license active and Spencer’s Property and Casualty producer qualifications active when checked September 28, 2026. Direct Google Maps showed 4.9/5 from 25 reviews for the agency’s Lakeville listing, not a separate Minneapolis-office rating. Read the reviews as customer experiences, then verify current insurer options, policy forms and prices yourself. A broker can compare available products, but cannot guarantee a quote, savings or a claims result.

Before cancelling the former policy, get written confirmation of the Minnesota policy’s effective date and proof of coverage. Give the insurer accurate details about the vehicle’s overnight location, regular drivers and commute. Then use the state’s license lookup if you want to check the producer or agency again, and provide the new Minnesota insurance information when registering the vehicle.
