I moved to Louisiana but my car insurance is from Florida: do I have to change it?

A Florida insurance card does not automatically settle whether a policy remains suitable after the car and owner move to Louisiana. The right answer depends on the insurer’s authority to cover the vehicle in Louisiana, the policy’s garaging and residency terms, the state’s minimum liability coverage, and the owner’s registration status. Louisiana law requires a registered vehicle to carry liability security. Its statute generally describes a liability policy issued by a carrier authorized to do business in the state, with a narrow exception for a vehicle not registered in Louisiana or registered elsewhere when the policy was issued or last renewed, if the out-of-state carrier meets an additional service-of-process condition.

Tell the company where the vehicle is actually kept

Contact the Florida insurer promptly and report the Louisiana address where the car is principally garaged, the move date, the usual drivers and the intended state of registration. Ask whether the company is authorized to insure the risk in Louisiana and can update the policy or issue a Louisiana version. If it is not authorized, ask whether the existing policy qualifies for the statutory exception and whether the company has made the required arrangement to accept service in Louisiana. Do not infer eligibility from the fact that the card remains unexpired.

The OMV requires proof of liability insurance when applying for a plate, subject to the stated dealer exception. Louisiana law sets minimum limits of $15,000 for injury or death of one person, $30,000 for injury or death of more than one person in an accident, and $25,000 for property damage. Ask the carrier to confirm in writing that the policy covers the Louisiana garaging address, that the vehicle is specifically listed and that its limits meet the state minimums. A lender may require collision or comprehensive coverage beyond the state’s liability minimum, so check the finance agreement too.

Keep coverage continuous while registration changes

Louisiana law places responsibility for the required security on the registered owner. The OMV’s new registration materials ask for proof of liability coverage, and the new-resident law gives 30 days from the date the Louisiana driver license is issued to apply for vehicle registration. These rules make timing important: arrange any needed policy endorsement or replacement before the registration visit, but do not cancel the Florida policy until the Louisiana-compliant coverage is confirmed effective. Compare the effective dates so there is no uninsured day while the plates and title are being transferred.

If you decide not to operate a Louisiana-registered vehicle, the statute includes a process for discontinuing its use: the owner must surrender the plate within ten calendar days after cancellation of liability security, or file advance written notice of nonuse with the intended period and the insurer’s affidavit. That is a specific nonuse procedure, not a general alternative for someone who continues driving.

Verify the company and keep the evidence

Louisiana’s Department of Insurance provides an official search for insurance companies and agents. Use it to check whether a carrier is authorized when the insurer’s answer is unclear; then ask the company for an updated declarations page and proof card. The state accepts insurance evidence in paper, photocopy or mobile-image form under the proof statute. Keep it in the car and compare the policy’s named insured, vehicle description and dates with the title and registration application.

The practical conclusion is not that every newcomer must abandon their existing insurer; Louisiana’s law contains an exception for some out-of-state policies. But a Florida address left unchanged is not a reliable plan after the vehicle is kept and registered in Louisiana. Get the insurer’s written determination, confirm state limits and OMV acceptance, and complete any required policy update before registration. If you cannot get a clear answer, the Louisiana Department of Insurance lists a consumer-services line at 1-800-259-5300, and the OMV’s vehicle-title office can confirm the registration document it will accept.
