Maskay guide

I moved to Jackson, Mississippi: can I keep my out-of-state auto insurance?

Moving to Jackson changes a fact that insurers use to underwrite an auto policy: where the vehicle is principally kept. The Mississippi Insurance Department requires drivers to maintain liability protection and carry proof in the vehicle. Its consumer guidance allows the proof card in paper or electronic form and sets the minimum liability limits at $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for injuries in one crash and $25,000 for property damage. The state warns that those minimums may not cover the full cost of a serious collision.

Call the current insurer before changing anything

Tell the company the Mississippi address, where the car will be parked overnight, who regularly drives it and the date the move became permanent. Ask whether the insurer is authorized to write the required coverage in Mississippi and whether it will endorse or replace the contract for the new garaging location. A policy bought in another state may have terms that change with residency, rating territory or the insurer’s state authorization. An old insurance card by itself does not establish that the policy now reflects the vehicle’s real location or meets the new state’s requirements.

Do not cancel the old contract until the carrier confirms, in writing, the Mississippi policy or endorsement’s effective date and the coverage in force. Check for a gap between policy periods and keep proof of insurance accessible while completing the vehicle registration. Mississippi DOR’s current new-resident FAQ separately says a new resident needs a Mississippi driver license for registration and generally has 30 days to register a currently plated vehicle. Registration processing and insurance are distinct obligations: a DOR tag transaction is not a substitute for carrying required liability insurance.

Compare more than the premium

The state-mandated liability limits are a legal floor. Ask for the same limits, deductibles, named drivers and vehicle use across each quote. Discuss uninsured or underinsured motorist coverage, collision and comprehensive protection, especially if a lender or lease requires physical-damage coverage. Request the carrier’s name, policy declarations, exclusions and premium breakdown; check the carrier and agent through the Insurance Department if anything is unclear. A lower quote can reflect a higher deductible or narrower protection rather than a better match.

A Jackson independent agency to add to the comparison

Martin Noone Agency, LLC lists personal auto insurance and multi-carrier comparisons on its official site at 1904 Lakeland Drive, Suite B, Jackson. The Mississippi Insurance Department records checked September 28, 2026 showed the agency’s producer-entity license active through May 31, 2027 and Adam Christopher Noone’s producer license active through May 31, 2028, with Property and Casualty qualifications. Direct Google Maps showed 5.0/5 from six reviews for this office; the small sample includes comments on responsiveness and communication, while some visible reviews concern commercial or specialty coverage. Ratings describe reviewers’ experiences and do not predict policy terms or claim outcomes. The published number is 601-362-4063; Maps lists weekday hours, 8 a.m.–5 p.m., and weekend closure. Call to confirm before visiting, and ask which carriers currently quote personal auto in Mississippi.
