I moved to Charlotte: do I need to change my out-of-state car insurance?

If Charlotte is now your permanent home and your car is kept here, tell your insurer before treating an out-of-state policy as unchanged. NCDMV’s new-resident registration page says an out-of-state policy is not accepted for North Carolina vehicle registration and asks for insurance information from a provider licensed to do business in the state. Your current insurer may be able to move your coverage to an authorized North Carolina company within the same group, or it may require a new state policy. The insurer must confirm that in writing; the old policy card alone does not establish that the car meets the registration requirement after a permanent move.

Match the coverage to North Carolina law

The Department of Insurance’s current 2026 guidance sets the minimum liability limits at $50,000 for injury to one person, $100,000 for all bodily injuries in one crash and $50,000 for property damage. North Carolina also requires uninsured and underinsured motorist coverage. Those limits are higher than the 30/60/25 figures that still appear in older documents; for policies issued or renewed from July 1, 2025 onward, the state’s revised limits apply. Collision and comprehensive coverage are separate protections for your own car and may be required by a lender even when state law does not require them.

Call the insurer with your new Charlotte address, the date the car was moved and where it will normally be parked. Ask whether the company is licensed in North Carolina, what date the NC policy will begin, whether the existing limits and deductibles will change and what the full premium will be. Do not cancel the old policy until you have written confirmation that the replacement policy is active. North Carolina insurers report required-liability cancellations or nonrenewals to NCDMV, so a coverage lapse can affect the vehicle record as well as leave you exposed after a crash.

Compare a local independent agency and verify the producer

If you want help comparing offers, Hutch Ham Agency, Inc. is one documented Charlotte option: its official site offers personal auto insurance and describes the firm as an independent agency. A North Carolina Department of Insurance-linked NAIC search showed the agency entity and producer Michael O. Ham active on September 28, 2026. The local office is at 1230 West Morehead Street, Suite 306, and its phone is (704) 525-6016. Google Maps, opened directly that day, showed 4.9 stars from 279 reviews; visible comments praised helpful service and insurance advice. Those are general agency reviews, not an independent measurement of premiums, policy quality or claims outcomes.

Ask the agency which licensed producer will handle your application, which insurer will issue the policy and whether it can quote at the same limits and deductibles as another proposal. Recheck the current producer record through the NC DOI license search, compare the written declarations and exclusions, and make your decision from the contract and price together. A local agency is a place to obtain another comparison, not a guarantee of the cheapest rate or a state endorsement.
