I moved to Billings, Montana, with my car: when do I need new plates?

Montana gives a new resident 60 days after establishing residency to apply for a Montana title and register the vehicle. The Motor Vehicle Division directs owners to the County Treasurer in the county where they live. For someone settling in Billings, that generally means Yellowstone County, but confirm the county from the home address before bringing documents. Title and registration happen together in Montana; the former state’s plate does not replace the Montana transaction once the deadline applies.

Begin with the title, not just the registration card

Bring the out-of-state title, current registration and identification, and ask the county treasurer which application and taxes apply to the vehicle. The exact bill depends on its type, age, county and plate choice, so use the MVD fee estimator or ask the treasurer for a transaction-specific estimate. A title records legal ownership; a registration card alone may not resolve a lien or title issue. Do not surrender or mail an original ownership document until the county explains what it needs for your record.

If a bank or finance company holds the title, Montana’s MVD says to ask the County Treasurer for a Request for Foreign Title Transfer, form MV63. Complete it and send it to the secured party so the out-of-state title can be released to the county. You finish title and registration after the treasurer receives that document. Start the process early in the 60-day period because the mail exchange is a separate step; ask the lender what authorization or payoff information it requires.

Check whether an inspection actually applies

Montana’s VIN-inspection page does not impose a blanket inspection on every new resident’s ordinary car. It lists Stage I inspections for specific situations such as a questionable vehicle identity, a Canadian registration or a bonded-title application, while Stage III inspections apply to vehicles with salvage certificates. If the title, VIN or vehicle history raises a question, call the county or MVD before booking an inspection. Do not assume an inspection is required simply because the plates came from another state.

Keep insurance in place through the transfer

Montana requires liability insurance when a vehicle is driven on public roads. The current MVD minimum is $25,000 for injury to one person, $50,000 for injury to two or more people in one crash and $20,000 for property damage. Drivers must carry proof, though the MVD FAQ says proof is not requested as part of the title transaction itself. These are different steps: lack of an insurance-card check at the counter does not authorize driving uninsured. Ask your carrier about Montana before the former policy changes, then confirm the exact coverage and registration costs with Yellowstone County’s Treasurer.
