I moved to Albuquerque: can I keep my out-of-state auto insurance?

Moving to Albuquerque does not automatically mean that an existing auto policy is invalid. New Mexico’s Motor Vehicle Division says an out-of-state policy can be accepted if it meets the state’s minimum liability limits. But the paperwork does not end with carrying the old insurance card: the state also requires an out-of-state insurance affidavit to be filed with its Insurance Identification Database. That distinction matters because the MVD can delay or suspend a registration when its database cannot match the vehicle to acceptable coverage.

First confirm what the policy actually covers in New Mexico

The state minimum is $25,000 for bodily injury to one person in a crash, $50,000 for two or more people injured in one crash, and $10,000 for property damage. Compare those numbers with the liability limits on the declarations page of the policy, not just the wallet card. A card may identify the insurer and policy dates without displaying every limit. New Mexico’s MVD accepts an out-of-state policy only when the coverage meets those amounts.

The MVD page answers whether an out-of-state policy can satisfy the state’s financial-responsibility rule; it does not promise that a particular insurer will continue a policy after a permanent move. Contact the insurer and report the Albuquerque residence and the place where the vehicle will normally be kept. Ask whether the company will endorse the existing contract for New Mexico, whether it is authorized to insure the risk here, and whether it requires a new state-specific policy. Get the answer and the effective date in writing. Do not cancel the existing policy until the replacement or endorsement is active, because a gap can leave the car uninsured and interfere with registration.

File the affidavit and keep the database record current

New Mexico uses form MVD-11268, titled Affidavit of Non-Use/Out-of-State Insurance. The MVD’s insurance page says an out-of-state policy may be accepted, but the customer must submit the signed affidavit and supporting proof to the state Insurance Identification Database, or IIDB. The page says the affidavit must be submitted again each time the out-of-state policy renews while the vehicle remains registered in New Mexico. Keep the submission receipt or confirmation with the policy documents and make sure the policy’s VIN matches the vehicle and MVD record exactly.

If the MVD sends a notice saying insurance status is unknown, contact the insurer promptly and ask it to report the policy to IIDB. The state says that, if the database does not receive the information within 30 days after its notice, the vehicle registration will be suspended. The current MVD page lists IIDB at (866) 891-0665 and gives its mailing address as P.O. Box 339, Hudson, Ohio 44236-9998. Use the instructions on the current form in case its submission options or address change.
