Midlands Technical College (MTC) grew from three separate technical and business schools. Richland Technical Education Center opened in 1963, Columbia Technical Education Center grew from a state trade school, and Palmer College brought a downtown business-school tradition. Their governing bodies joined in 1973; on July 1, 1974, they formally became Midlands Technical College. Today MTC serves Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties with academic programs, workforce training and nine campuses or specialized teaching locations across the Midlands.
Choose a credential and map the time
MTC’s schools cover advanced manufacturing and skilled trades; education and public service; health care; social and behavioral sciences; business; English and humanities; and STEM. Students can pursue associate degrees, diplomas, academic certificates, transfer coursework and short workforce credentials. The college distinguishes credit-bearing academic courses, which may transfer, from continuing-education training, which does not. A transfer route often begins with the first 60 credits of a bachelor’s degree, but each program map determines the sequence. For a specific example, the Registered Nurse ADN plan lists 68 credit hours over five full-time terms after prerequisites; competitive entry, clinical requirements and course order can extend the calendar. Human Services AAS includes supervised field placements. Check the active catalog and plan before estimating a finish date.
Applying, placement and English
New academic students choose a program and submit MTC’s online application. The college currently lists a $35 application fee. Applicants may need a high-school record or GED, transcripts from colleges attended and recent SAT or ACT scores. After applying, Admissions determines whether placement tests are needed; some test scores, prior college credit or other criteria can exempt students from part of testing. New and transfer students complete an in-person orientation with advising before registration. Nursing and other health programs have prerequisites and separate competitive application periods, so general admission is only the first step.
MTC’s international-student information says the college does not offer an intensive English-language program, though foundational reading and writing courses are available. Ask Admissions how placement works and when to take English courses before beginning a regular program. Separately, Richland One Adult Education offers an adult ESL program in Columbia. It is a district service, separate from MTC credit admission, and may provide structured language practice while a learner prepares for academic English. What tuition may look like
MTC publishes tuition of $206 per credit hour for residents of Richland, Lexington and Fairfield counties, $258 for residents of other South Carolina counties and $618 for out-of-state and international students. At 12 credits, that equals $2,472, $3,096 or $7,416 in tuition before fees and books. The college also lists a $35 application fee, $50 enrollment fee, $150 student fee and per-credit general or technical course fees; some programs add costs. These published rates are not a personal bill. MTC’s cost-of-attendance page gives a separate full-time budget that includes books, transport and living expenses for the academic year named there.
Financial aid starts with FAFSA. MTC lists federal aid, South Carolina Lottery Tuition Assistance, SC WINS and LIFE as possible options, each with rules for residency, enrollment, program and academic progress. SC WINS may cover eligible tuition, fees and required course expenses left after other aid. The MTC Foundation also posts scholarships and application dates. Send requested documents promptly, monitor MyMTC email and ask Student Financial Services which awards apply to the selected program. Do not assume an award until it appears in the student’s notice.
Nine places to study around Columbia
Airport Campus in West Columbia combines student services, nursing and health-science simulation, advanced manufacturing and an Allied Dental Clinic. Beltline in Columbia places student services alongside business and information-technology programs. Northeast has technology and manufacturing labs, a business accelerator and the Cornerstone workforce center. Harbison in Irmo offers academic and continuing-education classes beside a 400-seat theatre. Batesburg-Leesville and Fairfield extend instruction into smaller communities. Lexington North Lake offers general education and full programs in several fields, while Lexington Health at Irmo Medical Park is a clinical-training partnership. Fort Jackson Center serves military education inside an installation, so visitors should verify entry procedures. MTC students can ride The COMET free on any route with a current student ID. Parking rules vary by site; MTC requires student vehicles to be registered and permits to be displayed in student spaces.
