How to renew Michigan tabs and registration before your birthday

Michigan’s registration decal, commonly called the tab, usually expires on the vehicle owner’s birthday. The Secretary of State lets drivers renew as much as six months in advance, which is useful when travel, winter storage or a mailing delay could collide with the expiration date. If the birthday falls on a weekend or legal holiday, the state allows renewal through the next business day without penalty. The standard notice is helpful, but the plate and VIN let many owners renew even if that notice is lost.

Choose between four renewal routes

Owners can renew online through Quick Renewal or a Secretary of State account, by mail using the renewal notice, at a self-service station or at a branch office. An online transaction normally requires the plate number, the last four digits of the vehicle identification number, an email address and payment. A self-service station can print the tab immediately, and the state charges a $4.25 transaction fee there. Office visits are available when a driver cannot complete the other routes.

Michigan No-Fault insurance is required to renew. If the insurer does not report the policy electronically to the state, online renewal and self-service kiosks may not work; use the state’s instructions to submit proof or complete the transaction through another permitted route. A renewal can be completed without the paper notice through online services, a kiosk, mail with the correct supporting documents, or an office visit.

Make the mailing address part of the renewal check

Quick Renewal sends the new registration and tab to the residential address on record. Drivers who are away from Michigan can instead sign in to the fuller Online Services path and enter a one-time mailing address for delivery. The state warns that this feature is not available through the Quick Renewal shortcut. If a tab does not arrive, first check the address; Michigan’s FAQ says to wait 30 days after renewal when the address is correct, then call or visit for a replacement.

Missing the expiration adds a $10 fee and creates a risk of being ticketed or fined for driving on expired registration. The late charge is not a grace period: renew before driving after the date. The renewal amount depends on the vehicle and registration details, so use the state fee calculator or notice rather than an old receipt. After payment, retain the confirmation and verify that the mailed tab matches the plate and vehicle record.
