How to renew a Massachusetts vehicle registration: deadlines and the 2026 email reminder

A Massachusetts registration does not renew on one statewide date. The term is one or two years depending on the plate type, and the RMV mails a renewal application when the record is eligible. On July 16, 2026, the agency announced that it would add an email reminder approximately 60 days before expiration, supplementing its mailed notice. Treat both as prompts, not as the registration itself: the date printed on the current certificate is the one to protect.

Check insurance and holds before paying

An active insurance policy is required for renewal. The mailed application says whether the RMV already has active insurance information; if not, the application must be stamped by the insurance agent to show coverage. A registration suspended or revoked by the RMV cannot be renewed until the status is resolved. The agency also blocks renewal when parking tickets, vehicle excise tax or EZ-Pass violations remain unpaid. Check registration status and settle the relevant account before submitting payment so a transaction does not fail at the last step.

Eligible owners can renew online or by mail, paying the fee for their plate type. If you use mail or online processing, RMV advises allowing at least 14 business days for the new registration and plate decal to arrive. An in-person transaction issues them once processed. A leased vehicle’s renewal application goes to the leasing company, so the driver may need to obtain the notice from the lessor. If the RMV has an old address or email, update the record before relying on reminders or postal delivery.

A new email is not an extension

The 2026 email reminder is a service change, not a new grace period. A message can land in spam, go to an outdated email address or arrive after a household has moved; keep your own record of the plate expiration. For a newly registered vehicle, the inspection clock is separate: Massachusetts requires a sticker within seven days of registration, then an annual inspection. A failed inspection or missing sticker does not change the registration renewal term, although an invalid or suspended registration can prevent the inspection from proceeding.

The efficient renewal sequence is to check the certificate, verify active insurance, clear parking, excise and toll holds, confirm mailing details, and submit well before expiration. If the mailed application does not arrive, the RMV makes a renewal form available online; do not assume the missing notice postpones the deadline. Fees vary by plate type, so use the current state schedule rather than a prior year’s amount.
