How to renew a Maryland vehicle registration before it expires

A Maryland renewal notice is useful, but the expiration date on the registration is the deadline to manage. Passenger-vehicle registrations are issued for one, two or three years, and the Motor Vehicle Administration allows renewal up to 90 days early. The notice explains the period and payment due. Check the vehicle record and mailing address before submitting so a hold or delivery problem does not surface after the deadline.

For an eligible vehicle with no unresolved issues, the state’s online renewal service is open around the clock and gives immediate confirmation. The registration card and plate stickers are mailed after processing. Mail renewal is available only when the notice says it is an option; follow its instructions and allow extra time. In-person service is required when the record has an unresolved issue, though drivers may also choose it for assistance.

Before paying, make sure the vehicle has valid Maryland insurance and that the registration record has no flag. MVA identifies insurance lapses, unpaid tolls or citations, and emissions issues among common reasons a renewal is blocked. A flag is a hold on the record, not a notice to ignore: follow the linked agency process to resolve its source, then return to the renewal. Fees depend on the vehicle type, weight and chosen registration period and may change; use the amount generated by MVA rather than an old receipt.

Keep the emissions notice on a separate calendar

Maryland’s VEIP test is different from the safety inspection used when many vehicles are first titled and registered. In general, used vehicles subject to VEIP are tested every two years; qualifying new vehicles are first tested 72 months from model year and then every two years. The program applies to vehicles registered in specified counties and Baltimore City, with exemptions for listed classes. MVA sends an emissions notice and provides online tools to check the due date by tag and title number. A missed deadline can block renewal and add fees, so check the VEIP date even when the registration expires later.

In September 2026, MVA also announced a new October 1 enforcement phase for residents driving on out-of-state registrations. That initiative concerns proper Maryland registration and exemptions; it does not change the ordinary renewal methods for a Maryland-plated vehicle. The practical order is straightforward: check the registration expiration, verify insurance, look for holds and any VEIP due date, and then renew early. After submitting, keep the confirmation and check delivery status if the new card and stickers do not arrive when expected.
