How to renew a Maine car registration in 2026: town office or Rapid Renewal?

In Maine, renewing a passenger-car registration is partly a town-office transaction. The municipality collects the excise tax, and it may issue the registration itself. Where it does not, the driver takes the tax receipt and registration application to a Bureau of Motor Vehicles branch. A participating town may offer Rapid Renewal, which combines the local excise tax and state registration fee in one online transaction. The first practical step is therefore to check the municipality list, not to assume every Maine town has the same process.

Rapid Renewal is for current registrations. The state service says a registration that expired more than seven months ago cannot be renewed through that portal; the applicant must go to the municipal office to pay excise tax and follow its instructions. The online service also excludes registrations expiring more than two months in the future, several special vehicle classes, and vehicles whose owners must file an SR-22. For an eligible renewal, have the current registration, insurance card and current mileage ready. Enter the plate and vehicle information exactly as shown on the registration.

If online renewal is unavailable, Maine’s BMV says to pay excise tax at the town office and bring proof of insurance plus the white and yellow copies of the registration application and tax receipt. Ask whether the town completes the registration or whether you must finish at a BMV branch. The passenger registration expires one year after it is issued, so the issue date and the expiration date matter when planning a trip or an online transaction. Registration charges are separate from the municipal excise tax.

What the plate change means in 2026

Maine began replacing the standard Chickadee plate with Pine Tree and Classic (No Tree) designs on May 1, 2025. The state’s FAQ says the replacement was tied to the renewal month during the following 12 months; drivers with specialty plates were not included in that mandatory change. For online renewals, the FAQ says new standard plates are mailed. Because that scheduled rollout extends into 2026 and the state separately notes processing delays for some reserved numbers, check the current BMV plate instructions if your vehicle still has a Chickadee plate or you are waiting for a reserved number. Do not assume a plate reservation itself renews the registration.

Before paying, verify the expiration date, the municipality’s participation and the address where any new plate should be sent. Keep the confirmation and temporary documents until the sticker or replacement plate arrives.
