How do I renew my vehicle registration in Manchester, New Hampshire?

In Manchester, the registration of a personally owned vehicle expires on the last day of the primary owner’s birth month. The date printed on the registration controls; a postcard is only a reminder. The city says it sends a courtesy renewal notice about six weeks before the deadline, but notices are not forwarded when the mailing address is wrong. If you moved, update the record and confirm where the notice should go before relying on it.

Manchester residents can renew online, by mail or in person at the Tax Collector’s Office in City Hall’s west wing. The online service is for existing Manchester registrations, not first-time, new or plate-transfer registrations. It requires the notice’s PIN and a valid email address. The city says the payment request does not itself register the vehicle: wait for the official registration and decals before treating the renewal as complete. A card payment carries a service fee; the current online page displays the amount before the final step.

Mail or in-person renewals can be submitted up to four months before expiration. The city’s registration page says mailed renewals typically take 10 to 14 days; its documents page separately estimates up to five business days to process mail, drop-box and online payments after receipt. Treat both as estimates, allow extra time and call if the new certificate does not arrive. Unpaid Manchester parking tickets can block renewal. A late registration processed within 12 months is still charged as a full 12-month renewal, which is not a grace period authorizing the use of an expired registration.

New Hampshire increased a number of motor-vehicle fees effective January 1, 2026. The state registration portion for a motor vehicle is now $42 for a vehicle weighing 0–3,000 pounds, $48 for 3,001–5,000 pounds, and $66 for 5,001–8,000 pounds; heavier vehicles use a rate per 100 pounds. Those are state amounts, not the total bill. Manchester’s local permit is calculated using the vehicle’s model year, original manufacturer’s suggested retail price and the registration period, and the city adds authorized processing and municipal fees. What the inspection change means in 2026

New Hampshire’s inspection instructions changed during 2026, and some Manchester webpages still say an annual inspection is required. In a February 13 public guidance release, the state Attorney General and Department of Safety said the inspection program was suspended until further notice, stations were no longer authorized to issue state stickers, and annual state inspection was not required at that time. The state also emphasized that drivers remain responsible for keeping vehicles safe. This suspension followed court and vendor-contract disputes and may change as the legal process develops.

The EPA’s current New Hampshire page lists only proposed federal actions on the state’s request to remove the inspection program; its public-comment period ended September 25, 2026, and the page does not record a final approval. Check the latest DMV or Department of Safety notice before acting on an old municipal inspection page. The city’s renewal date and payment still apply even while inspections are paused.
