How do I renew my Montana license plates in Billings before they expire?

In Montana, the month printed on a light-vehicle license plate tells the owner when to renew. The Motor Vehicle Division says the first title and registration determine the registration period and expiration month; renew during that month at the County Treasurer in the county where you live. A Billings resident should confirm that Yellowstone County holds the vehicle record. Do not use a driver-license birthday or an old out-of-state tag as the renewal date.

Montana offers 12-month and 24-month registration choices for light vehicles. An owner of a light vehicle that is 11 years old or older may choose permanent registration, which does not require renewal while ownership remains unchanged. The permanent option has a different upfront calculation, including five times the local option motor-vehicle tax or the applicable flat fee; it is not simply a free lifetime sticker. Specialty plates can also carry annual donations or recertification requirements that make permanent registration unavailable. Registration costs are not one statewide flat amount. MVD separates the registration rate, county option tax, other registration fees and special-plate charges. If the online renewal is unavailable or a vehicle record does not match, the MVD FAQ directs customers to renew by mail or visit the local County Treasurer.

Use the official 2026 MVD channels

Montana’s MVD announced a new website address and reorganized its online services; use the current mvdmt.gov portal rather than an old bookmark when looking for renewal. The department also warns that it does not send text messages with links to make payments. Open the official site directly or contact Yellowstone County’s Treasurer if a text, email or payment link looks unexpected. Keep the renewal confirmation, and contact the treasurer if updated tabs or a mailed registration do not arrive; MVD says county staff can check the status.

Avoid a registration lapse

Renew before the month on the plate ends, especially if you will be travelling or relying on mail. Review the vehicle number, plate, address and any plate-specific donation or certification before submitting payment. If you recently changed counties, Montana lets residents keep current plates until the regular renewal is due; at renewal they can update the address through online services. A separate category of permanently registered vehicles may need no renewal action. When in doubt, ask the county office whether the vehicle is annual, two-year or permanent before paying a fee that may not apply.
