How do I renew my Missouri license plates and avoid a registration lapse?

Check tax and insurance evidence first

The department asks for proof of personal-property-tax compliance: for a one-year registration, the paid receipt from the previous year or a statement of non-assessment; for a two-year registration, proof covering the previous two years or the applicable non-assessment statement. A move to another Missouri county can change which assessor’s records matter, so confirm the address and county on file and bring the paper receipt if the electronic check does not find it.

Missouri also requires current evidence of financial responsibility. Keep the insurance identification card available and compare its vehicle identification number with the renewal record. The DOR’s online system checks the VIN against its insurance database, but the agency warns that some insurers do not provide records it can verify. A policy can be active while an electronic match fails; that does not mean the owner should simply enter different information. Check the card and, if the system still cannot confirm coverage, renew by mail or at a license office with acceptable proof.

Know whether an inspection applies to your vehicle

When required, safety or emissions certificates must be no more than 60 days old for the registration renewal. Emissions testing applies to vehicles registered in St. Louis City and Jefferson, St. Charles and St. Louis counties, with exemptions determined by vehicle type and other rules. The DOR’s safety-inspection exemption for certain newer, lower-mileage vehicles is based on both model year and odometer reading; it is not a blanket exemption from emissions. Check the state’s current inspection information for the specific vehicle and county rather than relying on last year’s sticker.

For a two-year renewal, Missouri generally aligns the term with the vehicle’s model year and calendar year: even model years renew in even-numbered years and odd models in odd-numbered years. The renewal notice and vehicle record show the applicable period. Registration fees vary with taxable horsepower or vehicle weight, and a different plate class can change the amount.

The renewal login changed in March 2026

The DOR says that beginning March 23, 2026, renewal notices no longer carry a personal identification number and the online system no longer asks for one. The current alternate sign-in requests the plate configuration, model year and ZIP code associated with the registration. This matters for anyone following an older notice, saved browser instructions or a previous year’s checklist: do not delay renewal while searching for a PIN that the system has retired.

Online renewal is not available for every record. The county must provide the required paid tax data electronically, vehicle information must match, and some plate or vehicle types require documents the online system cannot verify. If the online route fails, the DOR allows renewal at a Missouri license office, by mail, or by calling 573-751-1957 on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. A missing renewal notice does not transfer responsibility away from the owner; the department says a form 184 may be used when the notice was not received.

If you renew online close to expiration, print the temporary receipt offered at the end of the transaction and keep it in the vehicle. The DOR says it may be valid for up to 30 days; contact the department if plates or tabs have not arrived within 14 business days. Save the payment confirmation, tax receipt and any inspection report together, then verify the expiration date on the renewed registration.
