How do I renew Minnesota vehicle tabs before they expire?

Minnesota vehicle tabs expire on the last day of the month printed on the registration, not on the owner’s birthday. Renewing before that date avoids relying on a reminder or sorting out a mailing problem after the plate has expired. The state sends renewal notices by mail or email, but its Driver and Vehicle Services guidance tells owners to keep the vehicle address current and use the notice’s actual fee details.

Start with the vehicle record

Check the plate and month shown on the current registration, then compare the notice with the vehicle itself. Registration is annual. Minnesota allows vehicle-address changes through a deputy registrar office or an online MyDVS profile; updating a driver’s license address alone does not necessarily update the vehicle record. A notice sent to an old home can delay the paperwork without changing the actual expiration date.

The state links renewal to its DVS eServices portal and local deputy registrars. Use the state’s vehicle-tax estimate for a preliminary amount and the actual notice or live service to confirm what is due. Registration tax differs by vehicle class and passenger-car details, while local wheelage taxes can vary. Do not assume last year’s total will match a new car or another county.

Account for the 2026 electric-vehicle surcharge

Minnesota Statutes section 168.013 and the DVS legislative bulletin set 2026 surcharge minimums of $150 for all-electric vehicles and $75 for plug-in hybrids, for registration periods beginning January 1, 2026. The amount is the greater of that floor or an MSRP-based calculation, so it is not necessarily the final charge for each vehicle. One state registration-directory page still displays the previous flat $75 electric-vehicle amount; that conflicts with the current statute. Check the itemized DVS calculation or ask a deputy registrar about the actual amount for the vehicle. The statute schedules lower minimums beginning July 2027, which should not be used for a 2026 renewal.

Another detail can affect the plate itself: Minnesota requires passenger plates to be replaced when they are seven years old or older at renewal, or will reach that age during the registration period. Factor the replacement into the process rather than assuming only a new sticker will arrive.

If the sticker does not arrive

Keep the payment confirmation and allow for delivery. The state says a duplicate sticker can be issued without a fee when ordered stickers have not arrived within 60 days. Apply through a deputy registrar or the online service, and check the mailing address first. A replacement request does not move the original expiration date, so do not treat the expected sticker as permission to drive on a registration that has expired. Confirm office appointments and service availability with the selected registrar before going in person.
