Gifu Castle crowns Mount Kinka, but during restoration visitors need to distinguish the landmark’s silhouette from access to its interior: the keep and castle museum have been closed since 19 May 2026 and are expected to remain so through the end of October 2027, provisionally. That does not make the mountain impossible to visit. Gifu Park remains a starting point for gardens and historic markers, and the ropeway takes about four minutes to reach summit viewpoints and facilities that are open. The outing has changed: it is a landscape visit, not an interior castle tour.
Begin at Gifu Park, which the city connects by a bus ride of about fifteen minutes from JR Gifu or Meitetsu Gifu stations. The lower ropeway station makes the ascent straightforward; the officially published adult round-trip fare is ¥1,300 and the child fare ¥650, though visitors should check for updates before travelling. From the cabin, the view crosses forest and the Nagara plain. At the summit, separate the viewpoints and other facilities from the closed castle museum entrance: steps and available areas may change with construction and maintenance.
If you stay below, the park offers a gentler visit and a chance to see how the mountain fits into the city. Garden paths and historic markers make a route in their own right, but the municipality has announced a temporary closure on part of the Meisō-no-Komichi trail. Anyone planning to hike uphill should verify the exact path; the fact that the park is open does not mean every trail is. On a clear day, combining the park with the ropeway avoids turning the excursion into a wait outside a closed castle.
The choice depends on what you came to see. If entering the keep or viewing its exhibits is essential, postpone the visit until construction ends and reopening is confirmed. If you want a mountain-foot garden, a short cable-car ride and views over Gifu, the outing still makes sense. Check seasonal hours, maintenance notices, trail closures and the weather on the day, especially during a renovation that may alter access.
