Maskay guide

What can you visit in Aso when Nakadake Crater is closed?

Plan Kusasenri, its observatory and Aso Volcano Museum as alternatives, and check alerts and transport before heading uphill.

A visit to Aso does not depend on Nakadake Crater being open. The caldera contains grasslands, viewpoints, information centres and trails whose conditions may differ from the restricted zone. When volcanic activity prevents access to the crater, the useful question is not how to reach the barrier, but which areas remain open and how to enjoy them safely. Conditions can change within hours: signs and authorities take precedence over any itinerary prepared in advance.

Kusasenri offers a panoramic walk across a broad highland grassland, with horses, volcanic cones and the caldera’s contours as a backdrop. The observatory, at around 1,100 metres, looks out in several directions; low cloud or wind can reduce visibility and comfort. Aso Volcano Museum beside the parking area adds geological and volcanic context through exhibits and crater cameras. The visitor centre is inside the same building, on the first floor.

The latest information checked, dated September 2, 2026, allows visits to Kusasenri, the observatory and museum while keeping the crater and an approximately one-kilometre exclusion zone closed. This is a dated update, not a permanent rule. Before heading uphill, check the Japan Meteorological Agency’s alert level, official visitor-centre information and road notices. Do not try to approach on foot or by car through a barrier, even if the view appears clear.

The Asochiho tourist bus timetable published for July 2026 includes stops at Kusasenri and the museum from Aso Station; some departures may require reservations and schedules can be revised. By car, check road conditions and current access or parking charges before leaving. A balanced day can combine the museum, viewpoint and authorised walking routes, with a meal break in the area. Bring a layer even if the valley feels mild: wind and elevation change how cold it feels, and stay outside marked grazing and hazard areas.

Bottom line

If the crater is closed, Kusasenri, its observatory and the museum can make a full day when they remain open. Check volcanic status and transport on the day.
