About Zao Chuo Ropeway

Zao Chuo Ropeway is a mountain gateway distinct from the better-known cableway that climbs toward the ice-covered trees at Jizō Sancho. Its large gondola holds up to 101 passengers and takes about seven and a half minutes to reach the summit of Mount Torikabuto, at 1,387 metres. Walking trails and views over the hot-spring area begin there. In summer, the ride offers an alternative to the ski slopes; in autumn, the operator highlights the changing leaves, while winter service forms part of the snow resort, subject to daily operations.

The official fare for the gondola is ¥1,300 one way or ¥2,400 return for adults; children aged 6–12 pay ¥650 or ¥1,200. Chuo Lift No. 1, which links another mountain area in summer, has a separate schedule and fare and operates only roughly from late June to mid-October. This distinction matters: a ropeway ticket does not automatically include every lift, trail or the line leading to Jizō Sancho Station. Before travelling, check which sections are running and which walks are safe for your date.

Visitor comments often mention the scenery, easy ascent and chance to combine the ride with walking routes. Some warn that cloud and changing weather can erase the views, and that attractions listed on older pages may be seasonal. This is an outing for seeing the mountain from above and walking, rather than a single urban observation deck. Wear clothing and shoes suited to the elevation even when the village feels mild, carry water and leave enough time for the last descent.

The station is at 940-1 Zao Onsen. A local bus from Yamagata Station takes about 37–40 minutes to the Zao terminal; the published fare is ¥1,000 for adults and ¥500 for children, with no reservation required. The central ropeway is near the terminal, but it is not the same station as Zao Ropeway Sanroku, so check the bus destination and final walk. The operator publishes separate seasonal hours; high winds, lightning or equipment problems can suspend service, so check alerts before setting out.
