Zao Onsen sits on a mountainside about forty minutes by road from Yamagata, and a day there can combine alpine scenery with sulfur baths. You do not need a car: a local bus links Yamagata Station with the village terminal. Once there, distinguish between two similarly named facilities: Zao Chuo Ropeway climbs Mount Torikabuto, while Zao Ropeway heads toward Jizō Sancho and the frost-covered trees often called “snow monsters”.
For a balanced day, take a morning bus, check which ropeway is operating and leave time for a walk at the top. The Chuo Ropeway ride takes about seven and a half minutes; the operator lists a ¥2,400 adult return fare and warns that wind or storms may suspend service. If your aim is to see winter juhyō, check the Zao Ropeway’s operation and visibility; it has separate schedules and tickets. Do not plan around the generic name “Zao ropeway” without confirming the destination station.
Back in the village, Shinzaemon no Yu has indoor and outdoor baths supplied with strongly acidic sulfur water, plus a restaurant and tatami rest rooms. Adult admission is ¥1,000 and the facility closes Wednesdays; the restaurant follows a different schedule. Traveller comments praise cleanliness, proximity to the lifts and the contrast between outdoor bathing and mountain scenery, while also noting busy changing rooms and a higher fee than the small public baths. If your skin is sensitive, the strong water may irritate it; a shorter soak and rinsing afterwards are sensible choices.
The official bus route from Yamagata Station to Zao Onsen takes about 37–40 minutes and costs ¥1,000 one way for adults; no reservation is required, though service is less frequent outside the main daytime period. Ropeways, baths and restaurants do not share the same hours, so plan your return before buying activities. A practical sequence is an early bus, a mountain visit, a simple lunch and a bath before late afternoon. In snow, wind or fog, check service notices and footwear needs; the viewpoint may close while the village remains open.
