About Onomichi Guest House Miharashi-tei

In a city where the hillside seems to climb straight from the channel, Miharashi-tei is more than a place to stop for a drink: the house helps explain Onomichi itself. The wooden villa was built around 1921, when prosperous merchants created hillside retreats for entertaining guests and looking out over the Inland Sea. It is registered as a tangible cultural property and, after restoration, became a guesthouse with a café and bar. From its windows, the water brings the map of rooftops, boats and mountains back into focus.

The shared ground-floor space serves as a café during the day and, depending on the schedule, a bar later on. The menu may include coffee, drinks and sweets, but not full meals; each café guest is asked to order at least one item, and table reservations are not accepted. Published café hours are approximate, and the house warns they can change without notice. Morning café service depends on whether guests stayed the previous night, so it is not a dependable stop for a timed breakfast.

Guests often mention the channel view, friendly service, breakfast and atmosphere of a traditional house; less favourable comments point to small rooms, stairs and shared bathrooms. This is a characterful, communal stay rather than a conventional hotel with a lift and private facilities in every room. Check-in is listed from 3 to 10 pm and check-out by 10 am. The house recommends travelling light: cars cannot reach it, and the final approach involves stone steps up or down the slope.

The address is 15-7 Higashitsuchido-cho, below Senkoji Temple and close to the park paths. From JR Onomichi, the walking route passes through the shopping arcade and climbs about 360 steps along Senkoji-michi; the ropeway also leaves a walk to the guesthouse. The slope makes Miharashi-tei a memorable pause on the descent, but a poor choice for travellers with limited mobility or bulky luggage. Check the official site before visiting the café, and confirm lodging arrangements separately: café hours and guest check-in are not the same.

In brief

A hillside villa built around 1921 and registered as a tangible cultural property, now operated as a guesthouse, café and bar overlooking the Onomichi Channel.
