Many visitors first see Onomichi from the train or ferry: a strip of homes, shops and temples squeezed between the channel and a steep hillside. Instead of climbing from the waterfront with a day bag, travellers often start with the Senkoji Ropeway. In three minutes it reaches the upper slope; the walk then descends through the park, temple and residential lanes towards Neko no Hosomichi and the shopping arcade. The logic is simple: use the ropeway to gain height and save your legs for the more detailed part of the route.
The lower station is at Nagaeguchi, about 15 minutes on foot from JR Onomichi or five minutes by bus. The city lists regular hours from 9 am to 5:15 pm, fares of ¥500 one way and ¥700 return for adults, and departures every 15 minutes. Service may be extended seasonally or interrupted in bad weather. For this route, buy the uphill ticket only. At the top, the lookout frames the channel and islands; from there the literary path and Senkoji lead towards steps and temple lanes.
The descent is neither a single trail nor level: it moves among stone, steps, temple corners, rocks and streets where people still live. Follow signs, keep a steady pace and do not turn the walk into a race; some surfaces become slippery in rain. Miharashi-tei makes a meaningful pause, not only because of its café: it is a hillside villa built around 1921, now registered as a cultural property and used as a guesthouse. Its windows look over the channel, but reaching it involves more steps and there is no car access.
Miharashi-tei’s café usually operates from around 11 am into the evening, but the house warns that hours can change without notice and closures are irregular; morning service depends on the previous night’s guests. It does not serve full meals or take table bookings. If you need food at a fixed time, check its official page that day or continue downhill to the town. The full route suits walkers comfortable with stairs; families with small children, visitors with limited mobility or anyone carrying large luggage may reverse the order or visit only the viewpoint and return by ropeway.
