About Atsuta Horaiken Jingu
The Jingu branch serves the hitsumabushi of the restaurant founded in 1873, but its advantage is its position: 2-10-26 Jingu, beside the Atsuta Shrine district. After walking the grounds, there is no need to return to central Nagoya for the local speciality. Eel is grilled with the house sauce and served over hot rice with condiments and broth. The traditional sequence changes the character of each portion, from the direct flavour of the grilled eel to a lighter finish with dashi.
The official menu lists classic hitsumabushi at ¥4,950 including tax, alongside other eel dishes. There are rice bowls, grilled preparations and sides such as umaki, an omelette filled with eel. The branch has 120 seats and parking for 50 cars. Compared with Honten, a seven-minute walk from Tenma-cho, Jingu is about three minutes from the same station and lies beside the shrine route. Its lunch service also runs half an hour later, until 2:30 pm.
Customer feedback often describes a flavourful, generous dish and staff who help first-time diners understand how to eat hitsumabushi. The drawback is its popularity: queues form at peak times, and some visitors wait after joining the list. Arrive early, ask how the waiting system works and avoid planning a tight train connection. Travellers seeking a historic house and garden may prefer Honten; those who want to preserve time for the shrine will find this branch more practical.
Tenma-cho Station on the Meijo Line is a three-minute walk away. The shrine entrance and paths make it easy to combine a visit and meal without a long transfer; check your walking route so you do not leave the grounds through a distant gate. Hours are 11:30 am–2:30 pm and 4:30–8:30 pm. It closes Tuesdays and the second and fourth Mondays, except national holidays. Check the official terms ahead of time if you want a course meal, and do not assume that arriving without a reservation will mean no queue.
