There is a very local answer to the walk through Atsuta Jingu: hitsumabushi, grilled eel served over rice with condiments and broth. According to its own history, the shrine was founded about 1,900 years ago and is associated with Kusanagi-no-tsurugi, the sacred sword. It is one of Nagoya’s most important places of worship. After passing the torii gates, giant camphor trees and shrine buildings, a meal offers another way to understand the city through a dish closely linked to one local restaurant.
Atsuta Horaiken traces its origins to 1873 near the shrine. Its name became associated with hitsumabushi, made with browned eel and a sauce passed down by the restaurant. The usual method is to divide the rice into portions: first taste the eel on its own, then add spring onion, seaweed and wasabi, pour broth over the next portion and finish in whichever style you prefer. It is more than a recipe; the sequence lets diners notice the texture, the sauce’s sweetness and the aroma of the grill.
The practical choice is between two branches. Atsuta Horaiken Honten at 503 Godo-cho has 180 seats, parking and a traditional setting; it is a seven-minute walk from Tenma-cho. The official menu lists hitsumabushi at ¥4,950 including tax. The Jingu branch at 2-10-26 Jingu has 120 seats, serves lunch until 2:30 pm and is about three minutes from the same station, closer to the shrine route. It serves the same signature dish but is more direct to reach from the grounds.
Popularity changes the pace: visitors report long queues at both locations, especially around lunch, while praising the preparation, well-seasoned rice and staff guidance. Honten lists Wednesday as its weekly closing day, but its website and the municipal tourism guide disagree on its second and fourth monthly closure. Jingu closes Tuesdays and the second and fourth Mondays, except national holidays. Check which branch is open on your date and allow enough time. Kaiseki courses need advance arrangements and cannot be booked on the same day.
If the shrine is the centre of your morning and you want to minimise transfers, Jingu offers the simplest sequence: visit, meal and return to the Meijo Line. Honten may appeal if you prefer the main dining house and a more unhurried setting, with a little more walking and capacity for groups. Do not schedule a tight connection after lunch: the wait can be long. This guide sets out the differences between the two locations so you can decide using practical details rather than the shared name alone.
