About Yakumo-an
Yakumo-an serves Izumo soba on Shiomi Nawate, the historic street beside the moat north of Matsue Castle. The restaurant occupies the former grounds of a samurai residence and retains a garden with pine trees and bamboo. A meal here fits naturally into a walk that can also include the former home of Lafcadio Hearn and the samurai residence, both only a short distance away.
The regional speciality, warigo soba, arrives in stacked lacquered bowls. The buckwheat is milled with some of its outer layer, giving the noodles a darker colour and a pronounced aroma; each portion is dressed with sauce and condiments. Yakumo-an also highlights kamonanban, hot soba with duck and spring onion in a rich broth. The menu is focused on the ingredient rather than offering a long list of share plates.
Visitors often praise the noodles’ firm texture, the duck broth and the contrast between the meal and the traditional house. The garden and architecture are part of the appeal, although some comments advise allowing for a lunchtime wait. Service runs for a short window and may end when the soba sells out, so arriving early is wiser than leaving this stop until mid-afternoon.
The address is 308 Kitahorichō, near the Koizumi Yakumo Kinenkan bus stop and within walking distance of the castle. The official site lists service from 10:30 to 13:30 and Thursday closing; it also says reservations are not accepted for groups of 13 or more. After visiting Matsue Castle, walk north along Shiomi Nawate to reach the restaurant, then continue among the historic houses and the moat.
