Matsue Castle retains the stern character of an early Edo-period fortress: dark timber, stone walls and a keep looking out over the moat. After descending, lunch can follow the landscape with Izumo soba, Shimane’s dark, aromatic buckwheat noodles. Yakumo-an waits along the historic street north of the moat; Chidori Chaya lets you eat within the castle grounds.
Yakumo-an occupies the former grounds of a samurai residence on Shiomi Nawate. Its warigo soba arrives in stacked lacquered bowls: add sauce and condiments to each portion, and notice how buckwheat milled with part of its outer layer produces a deeper flavour. The menu also includes kamonanban with duck, spring onion and hot broth. The garden and old house make lunch a destination in itself, although service runs only from 10:30 to 13:30 and may end when the soba sells out. The walk from the castle follows the moat past a samurai residence and Lafcadio Hearn’s former home.
Chidori Chaya answers a different need: a seat without leaving the park. It is beside the information centre on the lower Ninomaru level, serving soba, light dishes, sweets and green-tea soft serve. Cold warigo bowls suit a short meal, and reviews also suggest that the menu is not extensive. Soba service ends at 16:00, which matters if you visit the keep in the afternoon. The official site posts some shortened days and occasional closures.
The difference is not only culinary. Yakumo-an offers a meal in a historic building and a focused noodle menu, in exchange for leaving the grounds and arriving early. Chidori Chaya is less formal and more convenient, a pause between climbing the keep and walking the walls. Visitors value the atmosphere at both; comments mention waits at Yakumo-an and a limited selection at Chidori.
The keep is open daily on a seasonal schedule: 8:30 to 18:00 from April through September, and until 17:00 from October through March; last entry is half an hour earlier. For a full lunch, visit the castle early and walk to Yakumo-an before noon. For a quick pause or dessert, Chidori fits more easily into the grounds. Check restaurant notices for your date and leave time to continue along Shiomi Nawate or return to the station.
Choose Yakumo-an for an unhurried meal among historic houses, or Chidori Chaya to eat without leaving the castle.
