About Kaba Sake Brewery (Shiramayumi)
Kaba Shuzōjō is a family brewery in Hida Furukawa whose history dates to 1704. Its shop is in Ichinomachi, a five-minute walk from the station, in a district where traditional houses and canal-side storehouses make it easy to explore without long transfers. Shiramayumi is its best-known label; the brewery also makes Yanchazake and other regional varieties.
The brewery describes a process shaped by local rice, mountain water and Hida’s climate. A regional guide also mentions a yogurt sake made with a nearby farm. Customers value the chance to taste different labels and receive personal attention; some note that explanations may be mainly in Japanese. Free tastings appear in visitor comments and directories, but may depend on purchase or availability: ask in the shop rather than treating them as guaranteed.
Hida’s tourism website lists opening from 8:00 am to 5:00 pm, while a regional guide gives 9:00 am–5:00 pm and a New Year closure from December 31 to January 5. Since the start time differs, confirm by phone or on the website on the day. The regional source describes brewery tours outside the brewing season and by reservation; this does not mean all production areas are open during normal shop hours.
Kaba offers a different visit from Watanabe: both breweries are in the same neighbourhood, but have their own labels, family histories and presentation. Compare the names and styles in the shop, ask for a recommendation by flavour—dry, aromatic or sweeter—and buy after tasting if available. Its proximity to Hida-Furukawa Station makes it easy to include in a walk along the Seto canal and old streets.
