D.O.M. Restaurante: Contemporary Brazilian Cuisine in São Paulo

D.O.M. Restaurante is a Brazilian fine-dining restaurant in São Paulo’s Jardins neighborhood. Chef Alex Atala opened it in 1999 to develop a bold, author-driven cuisine that celebrates Brazil’s rich sociobiodiversity through native ingredients little known beyond their regions of origin, including jambu, tucupi, açaí, priprioca, and bacuri.

Recognition and Michelin Distinction

The restaurant was the first in Brazil to receive two Michelin stars when the guide arrived in the country in 2015, and it has retained that distinction. The restaurant credits that consistency to Atala and his team’s work and continued exploration of authentic Brazilian flavors through technique, creativity, and irreverence. One example it cites is the iconic Amazonian ant, which has become a recurring element in its tasting menus.

Alex Atala and Menu Development

Alex Atala’s life story is intertwined with the rise of Brazilian gastronomy. His work at D.O.M. draws on childhood memories of fishing and family camping trips, classical techniques learned in kitchens in Belgium, France, and Italy, and the country’s natural and cultural richness. Atala and Geovane Carneiro develop the restaurant’s menus by immersing themselves in the food cultures of different Brazilian regions and biomes and meeting with producers and artisans to identify and select ingredients. Tasting and testing with the kitchen team helps shape the restaurant’s exclusive menu, which changes its theme annually.

Private Events

D.O.M. has a private space for small groups on the restaurant’s upper floor, the Mezanino. It is available for social or corporate events at lunch or dinner. A shared main table seats up to 14, with the option of adding a second side table for up to six more, for a total of 20 guests. The space is fully private and serves the restaurant’s exclusive menu.

Hours

The restaurant is open Monday through Friday from noon to 3 p.m. and 7 to 11 p.m.; Saturday from 7 to 11 p.m.; and closed on Sundays.
