About Tacos El Poblano Yonkers

The taco that changed a coffee-shop menu

Alfonso Alvarez was running a Yonkers coffee shop when he added tacos to its American menu in 1990. The response encouraged him to open Tacos El Poblano, bringing the cooking of his home state of Puebla into a business that has remained part of the city for decades. His subsequent work supporting other entrepreneurs included founding the Yonkers Mexican American Chamber of Commerce.

The current taco list rewards a close look at the filling. Barbacoa is tender goat here, rather than an unspecified beef preparation. Taco árabe uses pork marinated in lemon sauce. Campechano combines steak and chorizo; alambre pairs steak and cheese. Pastor, carnitas, chicken, lengua and shrimp complete a range that can be ordered with the usual onion and cilantro. The optional American-style topping adds lettuce, tomato, sour cream and cotija.

The handmade quesadilla section has quesillo with squash blossom, huitlacoche, chicken or steak. Molotes offer a filled, fried corn-dough preparation finished with cream, cheese and salsa. A Poblano Combo brings mini sopes, chalupas, wings and guacamole together, while dorados supply another crisp taco format. Those dishes give the kitchen a Puebla identity beyond its familiar grilled-meat tacos.
