About Montgomery GI Bill Selected Reserve (MGIB-SR / Chapter 1606)
It is a monthly education benefit for Reserve members who meet their initial service commitment and maintain eligibility.
Core requirements include a six-year Selected Reserve obligation begun after VA’s specified dates, completion of Initial Active Duty for Training, a diploma/GED, and good standing in an eligible unit. Members need a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE/DD Form 2384-1) from their unit. Eligibility may end when leaving the Reserve, subject to case-specific exceptions and deadlines.
Request the NOBE from your unit, apply through VA.gov with Form 22-1990, and confirm that your school and program are approved. After enrolling, ask the campus to certify courses and verify payment timing. Ask your military education services officer how Tuition Assistance, GI Bill benefits, and kickers interact before combining them.
