MGIB-SR, known as Chapter 1606, provides monthly education payments to certain Selected Reserve members, including components of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Coast Guard, and National Guard. Unlike a benefit that directly covers tuition, payment generally goes to the student and must be budgeted alongside tuition, fees, books, and other aid.
Core requirements include a six-year Selected Reserve obligation begun after VA’s specified dates, completion of Initial Active Duty for Training, a diploma/GED, and good standing in an eligible unit. Members need a Notice of Basic Eligibility (NOBE/DD Form 2384-1) from their unit. Eligibility may end when leaving the Reserve, subject to case-specific exceptions and deadlines.
For higher education, the published rate for October 1, 2026–September 30, 2027 is $508 per month at full-time enrollment; lighter course loads receive less. Payments are prorated by enrollment days and charged against entitlement months. A kicker may increase the payment, but depends on the service contract and is not universal.
Request the NOBE from your unit, apply through VA.gov with Form 22-1990, and confirm that your school and program are approved. After enrolling, ask the campus to certify courses and verify payment timing. Ask your military education services officer how Tuition Assistance, GI Bill benefits, and kickers interact before combining them.
The monthly payment may not cover the full cost. Confirm current rates, the use deadline, and any service obligation before leaving the Reserve. Read the program profile and the administering agency; ask your financial-aid office to review your individual case.
