About Rhode Island Promise — Community College of Rhode Island

Rhode Island Promise pays up to two years of tuition and mandatory fees at the Community College of Rhode Island for eligible residents who start immediately after high-school graduation or earning a GED. It is not a general scholarship for any adult who wants to return later: timing matters. For fall 2026, CCRI says students must be age 18 or younger; graduates who are 19, 20 or 21 must submit an appeal. Enrollment must begin in the term immediately after graduation, and students must pursue an associate degree.

The application path starts with CCRI admission and the FAFSA for the correct aid year. Students then submit an official final high-school or GED transcript and complete any items shown in MyCCRI; the portal may request additional forms or verification. To renew, CCRI requires a 2.5 cumulative GPA and at least 24 completed credits during the first year; 30 are recommended to stay on a two-year graduation track. Students must remain enrolled each semester and update FAFSA for year two. A lighter schedule may require winter or summer courses to reach the credit total, and students should not assume the scholarship pays for those terms.

The award is last-dollar aid: other available non-loan aid is applied before Promise covers remaining tuition and mandatory fees. State policy excludes housing, meals, books, transportation and certain course or program charges. That is why two Promise students can receive different amounts and why “tuition-free” does not always leave a zero bill. Ask CCRI for a calculation showing cost, Pell, grants and balance. CCRI’s FAQ says students with documented disabilities may request a reduced course load and reasonable accommodations; contact Disability Services before the semester begins.

In public discussions, one student asks whether another application is needed, while others point to FAFSA and outstanding requirements. Some students mention book vouchers or fees covered in a particular year, but that does not guarantee the same benefit in fall 2026. The official page controls. Review MyCCRI’s Student Requirements section, save the FAFSA confirmation and request written confirmation of eligibility, accepted credits and uncovered charges. Do not wait until the payment deadline to resolve a document flag.

The scholarship can be a first step toward a bachelor’s degree, but CCRI Promise does not guarantee admission or automatic transfer to a four-year college. Ask an academic adviser to map course equivalencies to your intended major before registering. One Stop Student Services handles enrollment and aid questions at 401-825-2003; the Educational Opportunity Center can also provide individual FAFSA assistance in several languages. To understand the real cost, combine the semester bill with books, travel, housing and time away from work.
