City of San José Senior Nutrition Program
The city program serves weekday meals to adults age 60 and older at 14 San José sites, with a nutrition card and reservation rules that vary by location. Menus are published monthly and include a suggested contribution for eligible participants.
About City of San José Senior Nutrition Program
San José’s Senior Nutrition Program brings weekday lunches to 14 sites, from community centers to neighborhood locations. Food also serves a social purpose: the city describes the program as nutrition and a gathering point, with a new menu each week. The city’s 50+ activities and its meal service for people 60 and older overlap at some sites, but their age rules and intake processes are not identical.
People age 60 and older need a yellow nutrition card to receive a meal. The city says to request one at a participating center and notes that reservations may be used; each location explains its own process. The official May 2026 menu suggests a five-dollar contribution per meal for eligible adults 60 and older and lists a fifteen-dollar guest fee for people under 60. Check the current menu because amounts and availability can change.
The city page lists site addresses, phone numbers, lunch times, and menus. Alma Community Center, for example, lists weekday lunch from 11:30 a.m. to noon and social activities for older adults. Call before arriving if the person needs a special diet, an alternate meal, or a reservation: the city says some requests must be made in advance and each site manages its own rules.
If someone can no longer shop or cook and is homebound, Sourcewise administers Meals on Wheels for Santa Clara County through a separate functional assessment. If the need includes personal help at home, the county offers IHSS for people who meet Medi-Cal conditions and need support to live safely. A congregate lunch and in-home care address different needs.
To start, find the nearest site in the city directory and ask about the nutrition card, reservations, current menu, and contribution method. The city’s general line is 408-535-3500, though each center posts its own phone number. The program page also links to the current month’s menu before a trip.
