About Utah Promise Grant — Utah System of Higher Education

The Utah Promise Grant is a statewide, need-based grant for adult Utah residents and recent Utah high-school graduates. The Utah System of Higher Education (USHE) does not publish a fixed award: the amount depends on available funds and the file reviewed by each institution. It may cover up to the program’s cost of attendance, but that does not mean every recipient gets the full amount or that housing, meals and transportation are automatically paid.

The published basic criteria are Utah residency or eligibility for resident tuition, a completed FAFSA and demonstrated financial need. Support can continue through completion of a first bachelor’s degree or 120 attempted credits, under the program rules. The state list includes public universities, Salt Lake Community College, public technical colleges and selected Utah nonprofit private institutions. Ask the financial-aid office at the college you plan to attend about eligibility and the award. USHE’s page directs students to campus offices rather than a separate statewide application or one common deadline.

A practical sequence is to file the FAFSA for the correct academic year, list the intended institution and ask its aid office whether verification or a campus form remains. USHE says students applying for 2026–27 should complete the 2026–27 FAFSA and offers help at fafsahelp@ushe.edu or 801-646-4813; general state-scholarship questions go to 801-646-4812. Because the state does not publish one priority date or guaranteed amount, get the campus deadline, the costs used in its calculation and the expected date for posting the award in writing.

Do not confuse this grant with University of Utah’s campus scholarship also called Utah Promise, which appears in news coverage and student discussions. The USHE grant is statewide and need-based, with a broader list of participating institutions; campus scholarship rules such as household-income caps, GPA or admission dates do not automatically apply to the state grant. When comparing offers, ask which aid is refundable, renewable or conditional, and whether the cost-of-attendance figure includes your housing status, books, meals and transportation.

Public discussions can suggest questions but cannot decide eligibility. In April 2026, a University of Utah student said that even a combination of aid and summer work left concerns about housing and commuting; in August, another asked when the grant would appear on the campus account. Those posts do not establish the statewide payment calendar or represent every institution. They do support asking for an itemized net balance and whether pending aid changes the bill’s due date. USHE is at The Gateway, 60 South 400 West, Salt Lake City; for an individual award, the institution is the decisive contact.
