About Next NC Scholarship — programa estatal

Next NC is North Carolina state aid that combines state funding with the Federal Pell Grant to lower the cost of attending the state’s 58 community colleges and 16 UNC System public universities. Students do not receive it by opening a separate scholarship account: the FAFSA is the entry point, and the college calculates the offer after receiving a complete file. CFNC advertises a minimum of $3,000 per year at community colleges and $5,000 at UNC universities for eligible students, but the actual figure depends on the campus’s tuition and required fees, financial need and course load.

Check every eligibility condition before applying; income alone is not enough. For 2026–27, the official guide requires North Carolina residency eligible for in-state tuition, a high-school diploma or equivalent, an eligible undergraduate program, at least six credits per semester, a FAFSA Student Aid Index (SAI) of 7,500 or less, annual household AGI of $80,000 or less, Pell eligibility, satisfactory academic progress and no default on state loans or grants. Semester limits differ for two-, four- and five-year programs. The college confirms the decision, so an estimate from the calculator is not an approved award.

The practical application is to complete the FAFSA for the year matching your first term, sign it and send the results to every campus where you seek aid. No additional Next NC form is required. For 2026–27, CFNC lists June 1 as the priority date for both UNC universities and community colleges; that date has passed as of October 12, 2026. It is not the federal FAFSA closing date: later files are reviewed in the order received and funds are awarded while available. Submit as soon as possible and ask the college whether it can still consider your file for remaining funds.

If the program is missing from an offer, do not assume that a missing line means a final denial—or that the scholarship will appear automatically. In April 2026, UNC Charlotte students discussed first offers showing Pell but not Next NC; another student said the package later changed. The thread cannot establish each person’s eligibility and concerns one campus. Ask the aid office in writing to confirm state residency, SAI, AGI used, Pell eligibility, FAFSA receipt, enrolled credits, pending verification, remaining funds and the expected update date. Do not accept loans as a substitute for a grant before comparing the debt.

Calculate net cost from the final offer: tuition, required fees, books, food, housing and transport. Next NC is for participating public institutions; students considering private colleges can check the separate NC Need-Based Scholarship. Part-time awards may be partial for students taking at least six credits, and amounts vary with campus tuition. Keep the FAFSA confirmation number, portal screenshots and college replies. CFNC provides the calculator and planning resources; the institution’s financial-aid office makes the final decision and posts the funds to the student account.
