How to apply for Next NC college aid in North Carolina

Next NC 2026–27 eligibility, FAFSA, SAI and family income, passed priority date, estimated award and how to follow up on a missing offer.

Next NC is North Carolina’s state scholarship that combines state funding with Pell to make public college more affordable, but the award is not a uniform payment. CFNC advertises a minimum of $3,000 per year at community colleges and $5,000 at UNC System universities; the actual amount depends on tuition, required fees and the campus review. FAFSA is the entry application—there is no separate Next NC form. Read the profiles for Next NC Scholarship and CFNC to distinguish award rules from planning resources.

For 2026–27, check every condition: North Carolina residency eligible for in-state tuition, completed high school, eligible undergraduate program, at least six credits per semester, FAFSA SAI of 7,500 or less, annual household AGI up to $80,000, Pell eligibility, satisfactory academic progress and semester limits. Income alone is not enough. CFNC’s calculator is an estimate; the college financial-aid office reviews the file and confirms whether aid was awarded.

Follow these steps: complete FAFSA for the year matching your first term; sign it; add every college you want to compare; check each campus portal; submit requested verification; and confirm that state residency is resolved. There is no separate Next NC form. For 2026–27, the published priority date was June 1 for UNC universities and community colleges. It has passed as of October 12, 2026, but CFNC says later FAFSA files are reviewed in order received and funds are awarded while available. A late filing does not guarantee aid, but ask immediately whether funding remains.

If Next NC is missing from your offer, request specific answers: Did FAFSA arrive? Do SAI and AGI qualify? Is residency classified? Is Pell confirmed? Which credits count? Is verification pending, and are funds available? In April 2026, UNC Charlotte students posted questions when an initial screen showed Pell but not Next NC; another said the offer later changed. That reflects one campus and cannot confirm anyone’s eligibility. The practical step is to open a case with financial aid and keep the answer, not assume approval or denial from an early screenshot.

Compare net cost rather than the phrase “tuition-free.” Estimate tuition and fees after grants, then books, housing, food and transport. Part-time awards can be partial, and the program is for participating public schools; the NC Need-Based Scholarship is a different path for some private institutions. CFNC has a calculator and online planning tools. Its Raleigh phone line is 866-866-2362; eligibility, award amount and remaining balance are resolved by the college you plan to attend.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
