About Next NC Scholarship — College Foundation of North Carolina (CFNC)
Next NC is more than a tuition discount: it combines state aid and the federal Pell Grant in a package for North Carolina students at 58 community colleges and 16 public UNC System universities. For 2026–27, CFNC lists annual minimums of $3,000 at community colleges and $5,000 at public universities. Households with adjusted gross income up to $80,000 may fall within the target group, but the college must verify residency, FAFSA and the other criteria before confirming an award.
Several screens apply, so household income alone is not enough. A student must be a North Carolina resident eligible for in-state tuition, finish high school or an equivalent credential, enroll in an eligible undergraduate program and take at least six credits per semester; part-time students receive a partial award. CFNC also lists FAFSA SAI of 7,500 or below, Pell eligibility, satisfactory academic progress and state-grant semester limits. The campus financial-aid office calculates and confirms eligibility after receiving FAFSA.
The application is straightforward: file FAFSA, with no separate Next NC form. CFNC sets June 1 as the priority date for consideration of the maximum award at UNC universities and community colleges; after that, files are reviewed in the order received while funds remain. For a student starting in fall 2027, the 2027–28 FAFSA is already open. Do not wait until summer to check signatures, parent information, corrections and whether the college received the FAFSA data.
The award can help beyond tuition: CFNC lists fees, books, food and housing among possible uses within the cost of attendance. “Can cover” does not promise that the full dorm or living budget will be paid. Some UNC Charlotte students have asked why Next NC appeared in packages at other campuses but not theirs; a UNCW transfer student says the aid covered much of the cost but summer still required out-of-pocket payment. These are personal accounts, not award formulas. Request a revised offer for each school, term and residency status.
When comparing Next NC with NC Promise, do not treat them as the same program: NC Promise sets resident tuition at $500 per semester at Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, UNC Pembroke and Western Carolina; Next NC is an aid package with eligibility rules. The $500 tuition rate does not automatically include fees, housing, meals, travel or materials. Calculate the full annual cost and ask how Pell and state aid apply at that campus. CFNC answers calls at 866-866-CFNC (2362) and offers Spanish-language assistance; the university aid office should explain the final balance in writing.
For eligible residents with household AGI up to $80,000, FAFSA SAI up to 7,500 and Pell eligibility; published 2026–27 minimum of $3,000 at community colleges and $5,000 at UNC public universities
