Who qualifies for Next NC and how much can it help pay for college?

Income, SAI, FAFSA, minimum credits and the June priority date: understand the Next NC package and the balance that may remain.

Next NC helps North Carolina residents planning to attend a community college or public university in the state. For 2026–27, CFNC lists annual minimums of $3,000 at 58 community colleges and $5,000 at 16 UNC System universities. Funds may cover tuition, fees, books, meals and housing within cost of attendance, but the program does not promise a free room. Eligibility is confirmed after FAFSA and also depends on residency, income, SAI, Pell and credit load.

To check whether your household fits, gather its adjusted gross income and the student’s FAFSA. The published AGI limit is $80,000 and the Student Aid Index must be 7,500 or lower; students must also meet Pell eligibility, be residents eligible for in-state tuition, hold a high-school or equivalent credential and enter an approved undergraduate program. The college verifies those facts. A household near a limit should not rule itself out using a rough calculator: use final FAFSA information and ask the aid office to confirm.

The minimum course load is six credits per semester. Part-time students may receive a partial award; published state limits are six full-time-equivalent semesters for a two-year program, ten for four years and twelve for five years. Renewal also requires satisfactory academic progress. The program is not designed to stack two advertised maximums automatically: CFNC says Next NC combines Pell and state support in one package, and Pell is not a separate second award within that calculation.

The application step is FAFSA only; Next NC has no supplemental form. CFNC recommends filing by June 1 for priority consideration at UNC universities and community colleges. After that date, files are reviewed in receipt order as funding allows. As of this update, the 2027–28 FAFSA is open. Check contributor signatures, respond to corrections and confirm that your campus received the FAFSA. April 2026 comments from UNC Charlotte students show confusion when one university displayed Next NC and another did not yet; the college must resolve each individual file.

NC Promise may change a comparison, but it is a different mechanism. It sets resident tuition at $500 per semester at Elizabeth City State, Fayetteville State, UNC Pembroke and Western Carolina; Next NC is need-screened aid at participating public campuses. The Board of Governors and universities list fees separately. Add housing, meals, transport, materials, program charges and insurance, then subtract only aid already confirmed. A UNCW transfer student wrote that Pell and Next NC covered much of the year but summer still cost money; that is an example, not a promise for the next student.

Open CFNC’s official calculator and request two written campus budgets: one with in-state residency confirmed and one for your exact program. Ask whether aid is split by term, how partial enrollment affects it and what happens after dropping credits, changing majors or transferring. CFNC answers calls at 866-866-CFNC (2362) and offers Spanish-language resources. A program minimum is useful for comparison; each student’s net price depends on the full offer and the costs of living and studying.

Bottom line

Compare the options and confirm eligibility and deadlines directly with the program before applying.
