About South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship — South Dakota Board of Regents
The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship is a state merit award for graduates who plan to attend an accredited university, college or technical school in South Dakota. It can total up to $7,500 over four years, but admission alone does not trigger payment. Students must meet academic requirements at graduation, apply through the portal and enroll at a participating institution. It is different from South Dakota’s need-based grant and other state awards.
The common pathway requires South Dakota residency at high-school graduation, an ACT composite or superscore of at least 24 (or an SAT equivalent), a cumulative GPA of at least 3.0 and the required high-school curriculum, with no grade below C in required courses. Rules include specific provisions for alternative instruction and pathways that may differ. Review your transcript with a counselor before graduation; a qualifying test score does not automatically erase a curriculum requirement when applying through that route.
The calendar matters. For 2026–27, the portal lists September 1, 2026 as the deadline for fall entrants; that date has passed. For spring entry, the page lists January 15, 2027, with an earlier preferred date to allow review. Waivers of academic requirements and deadlines are narrow. Graduates generally must enter the program within five years, but payment eligibility also depends on term and institution. Confirm in the portal which application fits your situation before uploading your transcript and test results.
Payments are spread across up to eight semesters and follow current annual limits. Each term, the Board of Regents checks a 3.0 cumulative GPA and earned credits; the credit threshold rises in later years, and simply enrolling in enough credits is not sufficient if they are not completed. A student who stops out, transfers out of state or falls below the GPA may lose eligibility. Limited waivers exist for defined medical, exchange, internship or military circumstances; ask for guidance before withdrawing or changing campuses.
A state survey published years ago found mixed views: some graduates said the scholarship was decisive in choosing a South Dakota institution, while others said they likely would have studied there anyway. It is historical evidence and cannot predict what today’s students will decide. In practice, ask your campus for a net-cost sheet showing payment timing, the balance still due and what happens if you transfer credits. The Board of Regents is at 306 E. Capitol Avenue, Suite 200, Pierre; its published number is 605-773-3455, and its portal provides timelines and forms.
