The South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship can provide up to $7,500 over four years when a graduate meets academic requirements and attends an accredited institution in the state. It is not need-based aid and should not be confused with other South Dakota programs. Applying means tracking two calendars: the requirements earned in high school and the portal deadline for the term when you plan to enroll.
The standard pathway combines South Dakota residency at graduation, an ACT score of 24 or SAT equivalent, at least a 3.0 GPA and the required high-school curriculum, with a C or better in required courses. Rules address alternative instruction, so check which pathway applies instead of assuming one combination fits everyone. Review your transcript with a counselor, request the final record and confirm your chosen university, college or technical school is regionally accredited and located in South Dakota. Entry must occur within the regulatory period after graduation.
As of October 12, 2026, the fall deadline for new students—September 1—has passed. The official timeline lists January 15, 2027 for spring entry and recommends an earlier preferred date to allow review. Submit the portal application, send the final transcript and respond to clarification requests. The page says evaluation involves the system and campus. Waivers generally do not excuse initial deadlines, test scores or GPA, so a late phone call does not guarantee that an expired application can be reopened.
After the initial award, students do not reapply every year, but the campus and Board of Regents monitor eligibility each term. Rules require a 3.0 cumulative GPA and earned credits that increase in stages; stopping out, withdrawing from classes or transferring out of state can interrupt or end support. Certain medical, approved exchange, internship or military circumstances may qualify for a limited exemption when documented. Talk with campus staff before withdrawing or transferring: attempted and completed credit totals can matter as much as your current GPA.
A state graduate survey published years ago showed varied experiences: some respondents said the scholarship played a decisive role in choosing a South Dakota institution, while others said they would have chosen one anyway. This is historical context, not evidence of impact for the Class of 2027. For planning, request an award schedule and estimate of tuition and remaining costs after other aid, and ask how the campus treats transfer credits. The Board of Regents portal publishes FAQs and lists 605-773-3455 in Pierre; start with the financial-aid office that will certify your eligibility.
