A family cart’s evolution into a Heights tortería, with trompo-roasted pastor, beer-marinated asada, birria and handmade nixtamal tortillas.
About Torta Truck Tortería & Taquería
From El Carrito to Central Avenue
Carmen and Jesus began serving breakfast tortas and atole from a Union City cart in 2010. Their daughter Victoria took the project forward in 2016, working fairs and festivals before opening the first truck window in May 2018. Jersey City became its base around 2020; the storefront at 413 Central Avenue gives that mobile history a dining address in The Heights.
Pastor comes off the trompo. Carne asada is marinated in beer before grilling, while the chicken takes an adobo-and-beer marinade. Birria is braised beef, offered as a taco with optional cheese and with consommé ordered alongside. Nopal provides a grilled-cactus choice. The menu also sells handmade nixtamal tortillas by the pound for a meal assembled at home.
The tortas deserve equal attention. Pastor goes into a bolillo with refried beans, quesillo, avocado, lettuce, mayonnaise and pickled jalapeño. The birria version uses a three-cheese blend; the milanesa de pollo adds breaded chicken. A vegetarian torta can be made vegan. For something smaller, molote poblano encloses potato and roasted poblano in a masa-and-flour dough, while a birria empanada pairs beef with mozzarella.

Call 201-408-9442. Tuesday–Saturday service runs noon–8 p.m.; Monday is closed. The official site lists Sunday noon–5 p.m. outside July and August, while the directory currently lists Sunday closed, so Sunday needs a phone check. Pickup and delivery links lead from the business’s own page. Meat by the pound, taco toppings and tortillas are separate components for a home taco spread; catered events have their own arrangements.
