Luna's Tacos Family Kitchen

A farmers-market family business with downtown tacos, birria and home-style Mexican stews.

About Luna's Tacos Family Kitchen

From a market stand to Washington Street

Isabel Luna started selling at the Iowa City Farmers Market in 2019. Her husband and children helped build the business; a Ped Mall cart followed, and the restaurant at 127 East Washington Street opened on January 19, 2026. The move gives a family enterprise rooted in seasonal markets a permanent kitchen, while the cart remains a separate part of its operation.

The food is not confined to tacos. Street tacos carry onion and cilantro over a choice of filling, while birria turns slow-cooked beef into tacos or a cheese-filled preparation. The menu distinguishes a corn-tortilla birria taco from a flour-tortilla quesabirria. Soy chorizo and mixed vegetables sit alongside chicken, steak, pastor and other meats, so a shared order can accommodate different appetites.

The stews are part of the attraction

Albondigas use chicken meatballs in chipotle sauce. Pork salsa verde brings a tomatillo-based stew; a la mexicana combines chicken or steak with tomato, onion and green chillies. Chiles rellenos offer cheese or tofu inside roasted poblanos. These are specific alternatives for someone who wants a full plate instead of another handheld meal. The family plate combines three entrées and two sides and is described as serving four.
