St. John’s Restaurant

Contemporary Southern restaurant in downtown Chattanooga with local ingredients, cocktails, and private event spaces.

About St. John’s Restaurant

Southern American cooking takes a carefully considered, seasonal form at St. John’s Restaurant. Set in a historic building in downtown Chattanooga, the restaurant develops a menu in which regional ingredients help define each dish. It appeals to diners seeking a composed dinner with full restaurant service and cooking that maintains recognizable ties to Tennessee.

Executive chef Patrick Sawyer leads the kitchen. The menu includes seared duck breast with confit polenta, mushrooms from Gowin Valley Farms, apples from Wheeler’s Orchard, fried onions, and hot honey. The combination brings together contrasting textures and named producers, offering a tangible example of the restaurant’s relationship with its agricultural surroundings.

Pasta provides another approach: the mushroom pappardelle is made in-house and served with brown butter and mushrooms from Gowin Valley Farms. Crab cakes with remoulade and seasonal greens also appear. These dishes illustrate an offering that combines technique, regional ingredients, and Southern traditions, giving visitors more than a single signature dish to consider.

The experience includes a cocktail program led by Merry Beth Pierson and a pastry department headed by Rose Ambrosio. Reservations are handled through Resy, and the restaurant offers gift cards. These arrangements make dinner here an option for a special occasion or a culinary outing in downtown Chattanooga, beyond an impromptu meal during a walk.

For celebrations, St. John’s has five private spaces, including a wine cellar for more intimate gatherings. Its events program accommodates rehearsal dinners, corporate functions, and celebrations for up to 300 people, depending on the space and configuration. The banquet team helps organize these occasions; that capacity refers to events rather than the normal seating capacity of a dinner in the dining room.
