About Aska
Aska, seasonal Scandinavian cuisine in Brooklyn
Aska is a fine dining restaurant located in Brooklyn, New York, led by chef Fredrik Berselius, a native of Stockholm. The establishment opened its first version in 2012 and has since developed a concept that combines the chef's Scandinavian culinary heritage with the immediate surroundings of its Brooklyn address.
The name Aska means "ashes" in Swedish. In its first stage, the restaurant earned a Michelin star and was named by Bon Appétit magazine as one of the ten best new restaurants in America.
New location in a restored 1860s warehouse
In the summer of 2016, Aska reopened in a new two-level space located in a restored 1860s warehouse, near the edge of the Williamsburg Bridge. The venue features a main dining room, a garden, and a cellar bar. A few months after reopening, the restaurant earned a second Michelin star, an honor it shared with only nine other restaurants in the city. Shortly thereafter, it received a three-star review in The New York Times, written by Pete Wells.
Culinary concept and service format
Aska's cuisine emphasizes ingredients from the Northeastern United States region and is influenced by the chef's Scandinavian tradition. The restaurant offers a dining experience based on a succession of courses prepared in an open kitchen and served to guests at only ten tables each night.
Publication and editorial activity
In the spring of 2018, Fredrik Berselius published his first cookbook, titled Aska, published by Phaidon.
